3" Lift & 285s... What do I need to do?

Ok, I've been reading various threads regarding having a 3 inch suspension lift on one of our 1st gen Tacos and running 285s. I'm looking at 285/75/16s for after I put in the Toytec lift w/ LR UCAs. The question is.. what modification if any do I have to look at for fitting them?

I'm running ProComp 16x8s w/ 4" BS, so they stick out somewhat more, which should help with rubbing issues. I'm figuring I at least need to do the pinch-weld beatdown... err.. mod. Anything else I need to do?

Can't seem to find any real definitive answers.. some do, some don't but they're also running different setups too.

 

i think you'll still need a small body lift ...unless you wan to do a lot of trimming.

 

I have coilovers up front, at about 2.25 inches of lift and run 285s, only thing i had to do was beat down the pinch weld. No other rubbing issues.

 

i would have said buy a 32" instead of those 33"

Put it on a see how they are. Tires varies along with your car's weight therefore it may or may not rub. If it does, evaluate where and fix/cut accordingly.

 

My last truck, 04 2wd Pre Runner, had 3" Toytec lift, stock wheels (no spacers) and 285's. Only rubbing was from turning full lock-to-lock, a slight rub on the frame.
No biggee

 

what kind of backspacing do your wheels have?

i still rubbed a bit with 265/75/16's on my last tacoma. i ran adjustable coils set at 2.5" ...it would have ripped my fenders off with 285's.

i think the key to running 285's must be using stock wheels. ..or wheels with the same specs. ...i had aftermarket wheels with -4" bs ..that may be the difference.

 

ive got 285/75/16's and they only rub on lock to lock turn on the frame but i did bend back the pinch welds so when wheeling it doesn't hit my tires when flexing but u can put 33" tires on a Tacoma with 3" lift with minimal rubbing.

I only have a 2.5" lift with stock rims and 285's. They only rub a little on the frame at full lock. You really shouldn't have to do anything to fit that tire if you can deal with a tiny bit of rub

 

Seems like the minimal rubbing is with stock rims then? Issue for me, considering I destroyed one of my rims and bought new ones.

Hmm.. well, I may go with the 31 or 32s for now, until I can decide how I want to deal with things. Sigh.. decisions decisions..

 

They make a 285 70 16. The nitto trail grapplers. They a little wider than 75s but shorter. Im thinkin about getting them. I think a 265 75 16 will look good on your truck. If i dont get the nittos im gettin 265 75 16s. When did you get the pro comp wheels and witch ones did you get.

 

Picked up the wheels a couple months ago, bought them off of Wheelers. Black steel, 16x8, the "Type B" ones (4" BS).. ran me just over $400 with shipping, which also included all new lugnuts and the black closed hubcaps.

I'm running 265/75/16s now.. though the tread is shot to hell (as you saw at Stokes).. Only get rubbing at full lock.. and that's cause no lift. Hmm.. probably stick with 265/75 for now.. who the hell knows what I'll wind up doing to my truck in a year.. lol

 

don't mean to thread jack but i have a similar dilemma i ordered 285/75/16 duratracs and i have stock rims and uca's i plan on getting LR ucas but not for a bit. my concern is that they will rub on the uca? the tire shop is ordering them tomorrow don't know if i should changed them to a 265 instead to avoid the headaches if they will rub the stock uca. any input on it would be great i really dont know what to do.

 

Y'all are making me worry now! I have Bilstein shocks at 2.5". I have a set of FJ 17" Wheels that I picked up and want to run 285/70/17s.
I also have Spidertrax wheel spacers(1.25") that I might run because of rubbing...
But you guys are saying that I don't need spacers?

Worst case for those who are running stock wheels and want to get 285's is you need wheel spacers until you can fund new UCA's or wheels w/ smaller BS. I would put them on and see. There are various factors come into play. The lift kit, wheels, tire mfg (even tho they are all 285/75/16's), you, your truck and etc.

 

Point there too (tire mfg)... they migbt be 285s but actually turn out smaller than 33 inches, or larger.. depending on tread depth etc. Friend of mine is running a set of those GY/Kelly Fierce Attitudes... in 35s... they are monsterous... closer to 36" and almost 14 " wide.

 

Either way, the 285's will fit. Just miner trimming and the pinch weld mod, and you will be good man! With your wheels, you shouldnt rub much at all. Get the 285/75's you will be happy!

 

Wifeys build : 2.5" Toytec lift kit, 285 75 R17 Goodyear wrangler MTRs 17" Motometal skulls with stock backspacing and offset (12MM I think), I had to beat the pinch weld down due to slight rubbing when at full turn. Its a 15 minute job you can do with the wheels on

 

eh, I'm gonna have everything off when I put the lift on, the pinch weld will be easily modified then.
