Intermittent wipers

My 1998 Taco has the 2-speed manual type windshield wiper. Anyone convert theirs to an intermittent style? Maybe the cluster from a 4Runner steering column?

I guess there is one thing I hate about my 1st gen...... kinda, maybe, sorta...... not!!

 

Oh cool, 2000-2002 got them? I guess I can source one of those years. It's one of those luxuries I'd like to have instead of flipping that lever every so often. Maybe it came equipped on specific models.

I have a stripped down SR5 and I have intermittent wipers. I bet its as easy as a bit of wiring and a new column. Try a junk yard?

 

I have a 2003 Taco and have two speed only. NO int. I don't like that very much and will probably at some point do something about it. If you find any info on how to do it, let me know. It might be more involved than you think. Might even have to change out the wiper motor. This is about the only thing I would like in my truck.

 

my 2009 has the manual wipers but i got the base model 4x4...doesn't bother me

 

Here is a thread on an '05. Wonder if it is the same deal. I suspect the first thing to do is find out if the motor is the same part number as one that has the int wipers. If so, what is required to make the change?

"I know that there were a bunch of us with non-intermittent wipers on here wondering if an intermittent wiper switch would swap directly in. The short answer is yes. Some of the following will be obvious, but I wanted to give as complete info as possible for future searchers.

There was some question before if the wiper switch from a tilt column would work in a non-tilt column, and from my experience, it does.

My truck is a 2001 regular cab, non-tilt, non-intermittent version. I took the intermittent switch from a 2004 double cab 4x4, tilt, intermittent, and the switch/stalk slid right in in about ten minutes.

Just remove the column covers. There are three screws, one down by your knees and two behind the steering wheel--rotate the wheel to expose them. It is NOT necessary to remove the steering wheel. Then gently pull the two covers apart--there are a few clips holding them in place. Angle them right and they'll come off completely.

Once you're inside, there's a big plug going into the bottom of your existing switch. Remove it. Then, there are two small screws, one below and one above the stalk. Unscrew those, and the whole switch will slide out away from the column.

Take the new switch, slide it in, replace the screws and the plug, and replace the column covers, and you're done.

All of the intermittent controls are housed in the switch/stalk itself. There are no extra relays necessary. The new switch functions perfectly, including squirters, intermittent delay, etc.

It's a nice upgrade for us base-model chumps."

I am going to do this mod at some point. I need those wipers. If I run into anything that isn't written up, I will post it.

 

So I called my local boneyard and thought I hit a home run. They had a intermittent wiper switch sitting there for $35. I went down to get it and installed it. It took 5 screws of work and that was it. I turned the wipers on and they worked great. Then I tried to change the intermittent speed and that damn little ring was broke. Crap... $35! So, I took it back and they gave me my money back. I am now in search of another one. I think new you can get them for around $130ish. Not cheap. Anyone else have an idea to find one? I am sick that one was broke. Price was more than right.

My '95.5 has intermitent wipers and it is base.

 

Do you know what years? Would a '99 work? I found one in a bone yard.

I now have a 2001 Tacoma w/2 spd switch. Is there a "specific" part number to look for when buying the Intermittent switch or will ANY Toyota switch work? (e.g. Camry, Corolla, 4-runner, etc.) Do I have to look for a switch from certain years or models that will fit in my steering column?

The only thing I kinda sorta hate about my '98 is the retarded dimensions of their cup holders. Low profile walls and an extra wide square shape makes for everything (expect an XXXL Big Gulp) spilling all over the place during turns, braking and acceleration.

 

Finally found a switch from a 2002 Taco on eBay for 27 dollars including shipping. Less than 12 minutes. Upper and lower steering column plastics removed and swapped the old for the new.

 

My truck is a 2000 Tacoma 4WD with extended cab and 2.7L and 5-speed.

I do not have tilt steering wheel, and my truck came with just the 2-speed wipers.

I can confirm that the Toyota part number to do the drop-in replacement of the wiper control switch one the intermittent one is: 84652-04090

If you do a parts search, you will see this part number listed as being for the truck with tilt wheel, but it is the correct part to do this mod for truck listed above.

The trim around the steering column (clam shells) fits tightly and perfectly around this new wiper switch. Also, the delay interval adjusts correctly with the markings in the new switch.
