4x conversion to single cab 02 2.4L 2wd



This is my tacoma... Its a 2002 2.4L auto with 44K miles on it. I love my truck but I WANT 4x4.

Is this even possible to do a 4x4 conversin with this truck?

Should I just bassicaly find a V6 taco 4x4 and swap out the entire front end including motor????

Is it possible to do a solid axle. Does my truck have to be a 4x4 originally to do a solid axle?

Would a v6 go into my truck with just motor mount fabricating? If so which is the better choice 3.0 or 3.4L...

Is there anyone that has done this to their trucks?

Ive have seen 4x conversions on 2.7L extended cab tacos before but I have never had the chance to ask how, where, and how much they did it for.

Much better off to sell the truck and buy a 4x4. If you want to do a SAS then a 2x4 is good to start with but it is alot of work and pritty expencive.

First off, the 2.4l is standard in the 4x2(in regards to first gens). The 2.7l is standard in the 4x4. So the 2.7 "conversions" were actually stock 4x4(unless you are referring to the pre's).

Second, the five lug suspension is different from the 6 lug. So there is a lot more work involved to convert the 5 lug to a 4x4. I am not going to say it is impossible, but easier and faster to just purchase a 4x4

Well I was thinking a conversion is ALOT cheaper then buyin a whole new truck... Considering a decent truck my year in 4x4 is over 7K. And buying used parts and finding deals I could get away with 1-2K build probably cheaper if i part and sell my lift kit. And do the install myself... with some help lol.

And what is the differene between a 2.7 and 2.4L? In my Haynes repair book they are pretty much the same exact thing. Execpt for the power band the motor is almost exact.

And since 5 lug suspension is different from what I noticed is that the cross members would need to be changed, and if I wanted to stay with independent suspension I would have to the weld on a 6 lug shock mounting bracket to match the 3 bolt patterns they have.

So I would basically have to find my size truck in a 4x4 and take the entire front end off and drop it into my truck... and if I use 2.7L and keep my motor on the side I should be able to keep the same motor mount placements... I think lol.

The difference between the 2.7 and 2.4 is the compression ratio. Also, the 2.7 has balance shafts where the 2.4 does not.

Yes, balance shafts. They are in the block and are driven by the timing chain. They are equivalent to a harmonic balancer basically.

Hate to be a kill joy but...

So sell your nice truck for $5k+ (that's what I would pay) and buy a 4x4 for $7k+.

No way you can do the conversion for $2k. If you do the conversion you will end up with a bastardized vehicle with little value and lots of headaches..

I agree Barnone, my truck is already a frankenstein as it is. Prerunner front fenders no rear bumper, radio doesnt even work. Half ass intake and no spare tire and jack.

Its either 4x4 or back to stock. Maybe a simple fabtech lift shock and spring...

idk I'm so undecided but something has to happen the front lift I have now is wasted and is not worth it to me to rebuild the shocks to my donahoe adjustable coilovers.

If I could do the 4x conversion for under 2K in parts ill do it. But thats not being to realistic. I think this build will only happen when I get more funding time and more research. Maybe even another truck.

And no the rims are not included lol ill pm you bro.
