Is it possible you can get less mpg out of a 4 banger than a 6 banger, if you use the truck as a truck as in towing things, or filling the bed with something heavy? Or getting up to highway speeds quickly? Seems to me the 4 popper would have to work harder than the 6 when it comes to needing torque, and suck more gas doing it. Once up to speed I read somewhere only 15HP is needed to maintain speed on level ground with no headwind, so it would be the 4 would use a lot less fuel then.

    If it's manual... I4 or V6
    If it's auto...NEVER

    Ha.

My first Tacoma has the 3RZ and it runs fine with the deckplate out and a flowmaster 40. Even sounds nice too. But my new taco has a V6 and its even more fun to drive. I got about the same mileage on both (18-22), so I'm going with V6.

There's no replacement for displacement. I prefer the biggest engine I can drive but for what I use the truck for, my 2.4 is perfect. Just wish it was a 2.7 though

You gotta love the better pickup with the V6. I mean it's a truck, but that thing has got some giddyup to it

I just logged in for the first time because I felt compelled to chime in on this one. The I4 has no timing belts to replace, no head gasket issues, and 165HP, which is plenty more than the venerable 22RE which was also just fine for this truck. I have driven my 4cyl 5speed Tacoma 245k miles and it still runs like the day I bought it, 220k Miles of which were on the ORIGINAL clutch. This all results in lower overall operating costs and greater dependability. Can't say I haven't pined for the power of the V6, but than why not just buy a tundra? Have you seen how much a new V6 Tacoma costs these days?

V6... I tow a camper for our recreational trips and load the bed up with 1000lbs+ on occasion while working on projects. I definitely need the extra grunt although with the mileage I'm getting it's like the best of both worlds.

Totally agree, I just replaced the clutch on my 3RZ at 200K and the motor is still as peppy as it's ever been. When I want power I jump in one of the Hotrods, when I want to go fast I jump on the bike, but the Taco is just so damn reliable I love to drive her, wouldn't trade her and the I4 for the world. Great daily driver, awesome rig to wheel and hauls just about anything that the Duramax won't haha.

its not about how fast you can go or how fast you can get there... different engines suit different needs. I bought a truck so i can do what I want and where I want to. The V6 does everything the I4 does only better give or take a mile to the gallon.

Well I agree, I am driving a pretty big I4 with my '03, so I would imagine they have improved them quite a bit since '93. In that case I can understand, but this '03 is plenty quick and I ender a highway with a small ramp and lots of traffic every day. I am very impressed with this little truck.
