No reason to replace any extra calipers. They "shouldn't" go bad, so I'd think your other one is OK.

the fact he has a bad one proves they go bad.

replace both. like headlight bulbs, one goes out the other is not far behind.

The fact he has a bad one proves they can go bad, yes. They are not NEARLY as much of a wear item as a rotor or pad. His other one could just as easily have another 150k on it. Mine had 250k on them before only 1 went bad. It's like steering components (tie rods, center links, etc.). Yes, they can break, but they can just easily last for the life of the car.

It's going to have to be his choice whether he wants to spend the money for the piece of mind, or if he just wants to chance it. Depending on price would decide if I did 1 or 2.

They go bad and start sticking for a few reasons. Moisture in the brake fluid (same fluid in both calipers), deteriorating seals (one side is just as old as the other), severe overheating (again both sides, unless it was caused on just one side because of another reason). Or mechanical damage. That one, yes do just one side.

You do just one, you're going to get uneven braking.

Sorry, this comes from 35 years experience doing brakes.

But yes, it is his call and budget. Can you do just one? Sure. Should you do just one? No.

If he has a systemic issue, than yes, I'd agree that he better replace them both.

I'll concede this one, since I don't have 35 years of experience doing anything. :)

Nah don't take it like that, you have some very good arguments! And I sure don't wanna play the age card here.

It's just kinda like, resurfacing just the one rotor that's warped. Just ain't good policy!

Haha don't worry, I'm not offended! I've only done brakes on about a half dozen cars in my life, and only had a caliper fail on 1, so I'm no expert. I got chastized on a classic Mustang forum for replacing my whole steering system rather than try and fix which parts were worn out, as I'm almost always on the "replace 1, replace them all" argument, but I got the vibe that money was an issue for him.

And yes, I would NEVER replace just 1 rotor or pad. Hell, I probably wouldn't even do just front or rear, if it was an all-disc car!

Thanks for all the input guys. I'll really have to look at my budget before I decide on anything. I assume that since my truck is pulling to the left when braking that it would mean that the left caliper is sticking correct? So if I decide to replace only one it would be that one? I'm taking it to a second shop in the morning to get a second opinion.

Took it to another shop today. They confirmed that the left caliper was sticking. They recommended I replace the rotors, pads, and calipers just like the other shop did. Was quoted $620 for the job. However, they agreed to let me buy my own rotors (p slots) and pads (hawks ceramic) and they will install. The calipers are killer, $170 apiece!

If they will let you get your own calipers too they're about 70 bucks a piece from www.rockauto.com

yeah, i'm def gonna pick up some parts from rock auto. Why is there such a price range on calipers on the site I wonder. Whats the difference between the $53 caliper and the $116?

Also I noticed on my estimate from the shop they included a core charge for each caliper. Isn't a core charge an incentive in the form of a rebate if you return the used caliper to them? If that's the case why am I getting charged $55 per caliper if they will get that money back if they return my old calipers?
