Is the 4 Cyl engine dependable?

I am looking at purchasing a 1999 4Runner with the 4cyl engine. I assume this is the same 4cyl engine in the tacomas.
Are these good engines?
I have no experience with the 4cyl engine only the 6cyl.
The engine has 170,000 miles on it. What are some of the things I need to look for when considering this vehicle?

Bullet Proof is an understatememnt. I had that engine in my other Tacoma. Toyota bought back my truck due to frame rust. Now I have the 6cyl, but wish I had the 4 because it would last forever.
