I am currently looking at purchasing a 02, red, off road edition, v6, with 74K miles, one owner, from the dealer. They are asking 12,888, which seems to be in line with blue book values, etc. The dealer said that they are going to replace the frame. The truck body seems very clean. The underneath does look like an 8 year old truck. The rear bumper could use replacing. I am thinking that this might be a good deal. Once they get it in the shop, perhaps I could work with them on anything else that might be a good idea to replace. I thought I should ask you knowledgeable Tacoma folks if there are other things to worry about for the 2002 model?
What else would concern you about this truck? Thanks for the help. I owned a 1990 4Runner many years ago that was a head gasket nightmare, but I like the Toyota trucks. Second option is probably the Ford Ranger, but I really prefer the Toyota.

those trucks are solid. the only problem was frame rust. and if the dealer is already taking care of that. ur good to goo

    Get it!

3 weeks ago I purchased a 2002 Tacoma, 4x4, V6, Manual, TRD, 70k miles, and 1 owner and MINT condition. I do not have to worry about rust since it I live in So Cal.

    Do it!

    Here is my truck.

Not a bad deal. Make SURE it is a TRD and not just a truck with stickers (although if it's from a dealer than that shouldn't be a problem really), aka check for the RR Diff Lock button behind the steering wheel to the right. Real important.

Many of us know of the headgasket issues with the 3.0 - but it was taken care of by Toyota. The 3.4 does not have near the same level of issues. Other than that, check the rear leafs, ride height front to back, how it handles bumps. See if the timing belt and water pump were done. At that mileage though, you won't have lots to worry about.

Thanks for all the input. I think that I am going to buy it. Yes, it is a TRD, SR5 V6. New tires. It even has a sunroof. The dealer is doing the new frame and a new rear bumper. He said that I am welcome to see it once it is ripped apart. I would be willing to replace additional parts, since the truck will be ripped apart anyway. What would you recommend inspecting / replacing, since the body will be ripped apart from the frame, I should get a good look. Obviously, the dealer said he would not hold me to the deal if they found some unreasonable things. I did find out that the one owner purchased and serviced the truck at this dealer. The lady traded it for an FJ. Single lady, no kids, so the truck really has only had one person in it. The only drawback is that she smoked, and the truck certainly stinks. I like the "red" discussion. I am color blind, so I don't know if it is the tampon red or the maroon. That's pretty funny. Anything else that would concern you, please let me know. This is a valuable forum.

If its an auto you might check front brake pads for wear, its probably on its 2nd set. Rear brakes are likely originals and good for quite a while longer. It is coming up on its 90K service interval where some things are recommended for replacement, this includes the timing belt and water pump.

At 74K you should be in pretty good shape. Especially since its had regular service by the dealer.

    gman88,
Great find except for the smoker part. Maybe the dealer can do something about the smell. I tried everything on a truck that the po smoked in and never could get the smell out.
Still a great fine. I keep looking for a low mileage unbutchered first gen reg or extended cab 4x4 but so far no luck.

I replaced the front brake pads at 90k miles on my 2002. Rear shoes were good.
Might ask the dealer to swap the timing belt while he has the truck apart?
    Shocks?

As it turns out, somebody purchased the truck the night before. I was about to drop off a check and somebody beat me to it. Back to the drawing board.

    gman88,
Tough luck. Same thing happened to me on a very nice first gen 4x4 at a decent price. I fooled around too long and it was sold when I went to buy it.

Just got a call from a dealer. They have a 2003, with Off Road, dual cab, automatic, with cap, 77K miles. It was purchased and services at the same dealer. I asked about the "frame" issue, since the 2002 I looked at needed a new frame. They told me they check and treat the frame. How much should I be concerned about the frame? They are asking $15,800 for the truck. Thanks for the help.

I wouldn't be overly concerned about it unless it is really bad. It will have a warranty until 2019 and they will inspect and even undercoat it every year it rust starts to appear. Should be good, by 2019 the body will be flapping in the wind, so go for it!

Yeah, I just bought an 01 Reg Cab Sr5 4WD and it had the "rust proofing" done on the frame. The frame looks good and has no rust on the inside rails not to mention it's warrantied until 2016 so I wouldn't be too worried about the frame; toyota is taking care of it. The truck I bought is in great condition which is very hard to find; if this truck is in good condition, grab it!
