Doublecab subwoofer trouble

I just recently got an 04 doublecab and am looking to put some subwoofers in behind the back seats. I found a box that has holes for a pair of 8s but I want more. The box has a 4" mounting depth and im looking for some 10s or 12s. I found some Sony Xplod slim series subs. both 10s and 12s. The 12s (what id really like to have) have a mounting depth of 3 1/4" and the tens have a 2 3/4" mounthing depth. If I put a bigger hole in the box, would they fit? I ask because the box gets narrower toward the top to fit behind the seats and if the subs are angled then the box would still have to be wide enough toward the top of the box...

I owned that box (Supercrewsound) for a few months and eventually sold it. Although those Sony speakers have the right depth, I really don't think they will fit. I went with the 8" Kicker that is recommended on the Supercrewsound page. It wasn't doing it for me so I looked at opening up that hole to put a 10" in. You can't open the hole up much more before you hit the top and bottom. Here is a picture that might give a better view of that than their web page.



Not much room to expand and the extra deep area is just a small section right below the hole.... to allow a little more room for the magnet. To me it looked like even if the speaker hung over the box edge a bit the woofer frame would hit the sides. I can't say for sure of course.

I went with this box http://caraudiofactory.com/2001-toy....html?osCsid=8112a6e2134986b9faa64f82b1701be4 and put a Pioneer shallow 10" in it. It fit with a little bit of shaving of the box.


At the time, the Pioneer was the best game in town for that small of box Volume (0.33 cubic feet). The Sony 10" looks like it would probably fit this box. You would want to see what box volume Sony suggests to see if it is close to 1/3 of a cubic foot.
I didn't want to build. I have seen some nice Double Cab boxes that people have made to fit 8" and 10" subs.

I have the other box, with 2 8" premiere's and it sound pretty good. enough for me atleast.
Just hated the fact that I had to remove the Plastic pieces on the back of the seats.

You betcha! The Supercrewsound dual 8" box makes you take out the jack and mounting brackets which isn't a big deal, but it is nice that the caraudiofactory box just drops in. The Supercrewsound box was nicely made, but takes up just about the entire back area. Going with the single 10" leaves plenty of room back there for junk.

Matt, I've never had a 10; I had a 12 JL in a previous vehicle w/200w. Based on your experience with the 10, how does it compare to a 12 (uh...if you've heard/had a 12)?

 

i have the setup from supercrewsound with the two 8s..i have pioneer premier 8's that get up alright. more than i expected. Im using pioner all around witht the exception of alpine door speaker. perfect combo of bass and voice and such in my opinion

The 10" in that small of a box is definitely a compromise. After the dual 8" Supercrewsound box, I put a 12" Kenwood behind my drivers seat. It gave me awesome bass, but I grew tired of moving it when I had four people with me (I often have four when we go out to lunch at work).

If you are use to a no compromise 12" sub, then the 10" shallow will probably leave you wanting more. I love that it looks stock and doesn't take up any passenger room. It still hits pretty good. I run a Fosgate P400-2 amplifier bridged to it and use the Punch PEQ (a 45Hz bass boost control). Without the bass boost, it sounds OK. With 9-12dB of boost dialed in, it sounds pretty darn good. It is hard to say how someone else will like it.... depends on what they are use to and if they are willing to compromise a bit to have an open cab.

To get a 12" sub back there, it would take the Pioneer or Sony shallow subs and some good wood working skills. I would love to see it.

mtucker, would you say it sounds better than the 8" setup? i wouldnt mind a bit more boom back there! and extra space as well

 

I didn't really want to go down to 8s just cuz i really want something that hits hard... i htink those shallow sonys will do the trick if i just go with the 10s. i had a pair of jlaudio 10s in my old truck with an access cab and had 250w running through them. didnt sound bad at all... i just dont wanna downgrade cuz of the new truck. so if i got those 10s id have to take the plastic off the back of the seats and still put cages over the subs???

 

Yes, you need to take the plastic off the back of the seats. I didn't care about that since you don't ever see the plastic unless you pull the seats down.
That Caraudiofactory box for the 10" is made to go in one specific place behind the seat since it has cut-outs to clear things (see picture). I am not sure how easy it would be to put a second one back there. You might have to go to a custom built box for dual 10".



Bmxican, I can't really say how it compares to your setup since I used a Kicker sub in my Supercrew box. I don't think going to the 10" from dual 8s will give you too much more (maybe a little deeper bass). The extra space is nice for storage, but it may or may not be worth the expense of changing.

Subs needs air space to get loud & deeper so if you are planning on SPL...good luck with those...if you are planning on getting some low end then those will work for you.

 

Mtucker, could you not take the single 10" box you got and cut some off to make room for a second? What mounting depth do you get with that box?

I suppose you could make the box less wide, but at that point it seems like you might as well go with a custom box. Also, the box is on the small side so you don't want to go too much smaller. Even if you got two boxes to fit side by side, they may not fit under that cross brace lip since the cut-outs in the bottom of the box (see the last picture I posted) won't line up with the contour of the floor. There are also clearance spots on the back of the box.

Oh yeah... Makes sense... Well I'm thinkin Imma go with the double 8 box and put the 10's in there. They have like a 2 3/4 inch mounting depth so I'm thinkin I'll have space to add 2 more inches to the hole. If I have to shave some out on the inside I will because I'm kinda having a hard time finding some 8's that are top of the line quality. I don't wanna put THAT much money into something and not be happy with it, plus, it'll be a better experiment... But thanks a lot for the advice!

 

i think sony subs suck! do more research...

 

Sony's arent what you'd call "top of the line" but they are perfect for what I'm looking for, and I think they give a good sound to any genre music. Lots of subs that hit TOO hard only sound good for rap and very few rock songs. Sony's have a good sound to give rock that extra scoop without sounding crappy. Like I said, I had a pair of JL 10s in my old truck, but a friend of mine who drives an 89 celica has a sony Xplod 12 in the back and it sounds great...
