Manual to Auto swap?

So I'm picking up a 2000 next week and its a 4x4 with a manual. I would like to swap in an auto in it. Is this possible? Also what are my other options?
I don't know much about this things since I used to have a 2nd gen and it was already auto. Thanks for the help everyone.

x2 being able to drive a stick is a good skill to have...if you already know how and just dont want a manual....I'd look for another truck.

 

I think what he's asking is if it's possible to do a transmission swap? Not if he should learn how to drive a manual. Alex it would probably be a lot cheaper to just keep your eyes open for one that is already automatic.

 

I'm not sure why anyone would swap a manny for an auto, but it's very difficult with the newer trucks. I was just trying to do the opposite on a 4runner, talked to about 10 mechanics, they all said don't even try.

 

I can drive stick ok. Not well but I can get by. I want a auto for the trails. It's alot easier to manage and not burn up the clutch. And connor I'm buying a LT taco with a supercharger on it.

Yes, it can be done ... Is it worth it? Well .....

It's usually the other way around - swapping out an auto for a manual. The set of issues to be addressed is pretty much the same regardless of which direction you're going.

Such a swap will involve things other than the tranny itself - for example, electrical adjustments (including a new ECM), pedals, a shifter assembly transplant, and a radiator swap.

 

OP, if I was you I would keep that stick. It is actually easier to off road with a stick. Auto's just go when you gas it, manuals can hold you on a ledge or keep you in the power band through mud. Auto's sometimes roll back more than a stick, which could be bad in some situations. Once you drive it a while, it won't be anything to hold the truck on a steep hill. Get used to the clutch and you will love the capability.

 

It's far more complicated than you'd think it would be. If you don't have experience with mechanics and working on vehicles - this isn't something you should get yourself into. It would cost a fortune to pay someone to do it for you.

Why did you buy the vehicle if it didn't have what you wanted?

 

For the cost and headache just buy an auto.

 

practice with the manual for a while then get a high performance clutch if your worried about slipping too much off-road

 

Ill trade you my Auto. Just do all the dirty work....

I meant I don't know much about 1st gens. I wasn't sure if they were easier to do swaps like this then a 2nd gen would be.

I'm buying the truck because I liked everything else on it. The manual was the only thing I didn't like. I'll get over it and drive it. since it will be such a pain to switch

Alex, I know it is easier to handle an automatic when offroading, you could get use to a manual. Like I told you when you asked me if I had a 3rd leg, I just prefer a manual, that's what I own and what I like to drive. But if you do find a way to make it an auto, I hope it does not take too much out of your wallet.
