Does anyone know if there is a difference in bed lengths between the regular cab 4X4 and the XtraCab 4X4?
I am looking at a shell off of a 2000 Tacoma XtraCab and need to know if it will fit my 1995 regular cab.
As far as I know they are the same bed length. Can anyone confirm or deny?

I assume they are the same but I want to make sure before I drive two hours to buy a shell only to find out it doesn't fit.

Bed dimensions are identical between Regular Cabs and XtraCabs from 1995.5 through 2004.

Bed dimensions aren't the issue you might face - it's the cab profile. Regular Cab rear cab walls are vertical. XtraCab rear cab walls slope forward. The front of a shell designed to fit closely on an XtraCab will have a forward slant. Some XtraCab shells have enough forward slant that the front will hit the Regular Cab rear wall. In any case, there may be enough of a mismatch between the Regular Cab rear wall and the shell's front end to look odd (if that matters ...).

The only way to tell for sure is to do a test fit of the shell onto your Regular Cab.

Do you know the make and model of the shell? If so then you can get in touch with the manufacturer to find out if it will fit properly on your reg cab. Otherwise take the two hour drive to find out like Enola says.
EDIT: Or can you get the seller to send you a photo to make sure the front of the shell is not angled?

Good point about the difference in the front of the shell. I think I am going to try and get some pictures of the front of the shell before I make the drive.

So yes it does look like there is a curve on the front of the access cab shell but the picture I posted of the regular cab seems to have the same curve. I guess I will have to take a drive to find out for sure if it will fit or not.

Thanks for posting the photos to illustrate the differences. If the XtraCab shell is designed to fit up as closely to the cab as the white one (2nd photo), it will probably hit the back wall on a Regular Cab.

You won't know until you can test fit this particular shell. Different manufacturers handled the front profile different ways. Some sorta 'split the difference' and designed one model that sorta lined up with both.

Ok decided that the only way I would know if the shell fit was to go and look at it.
The shell turned out to be a ARE Impulse model.
I was excited that it wasn't some no-name shell. It looked pretty good, and was the right color.
It doesn't fit EXACTLY right but close enough.
It hits a little bit on the brake light.
I wonder if there is a way to get a flatter brake light?

I will post pics in the morning.

    trdracing5,
Sounds like you got a great deal since I paid $600 back in 2002 for my aluminum work truck topper.
I'd worry about the "It hits a little bit on the brake light" since you will get some flex on rough roads.
Can't you "you could always mount your bed a little further back." like Dig said? Say 1/4"?

    Here is the problem:(.....
The shell needs to be pushed forward because it is hanging off the rear of the bed about 1/4 to 1/2 inch.
I can't push it any further forward because it is hitting the brake light.
I have never really noticed how far the brake light sticks out until now.
If the brake light was closer to being flush with the truck that would solve my problem.
    Any ideas:confused:

It is a really nice looking truck. Congrats on that!

Have you thought about removing the 3rd brake light altogether? Don't know if there are legal implications of that or not. Folks driving behind you certainly can't see it anyways.

Removing it might give just enough clearance.

If I could remove the brake light and put something in its place like some sort of cover I would probably do that.
I really don't seem to remember other Tacomas having a brake light that stuck out as far. Maybe it was an early Tacoma thing.
