Brake Pads on '97 5-lug

Asking this for my old man. He's replacing the brake pads on his Tacoma with these from Advance Auto

The ad says the shims are included, but he didn't see any. So he went ahead and put the pads on and said he barely had enough room to get the pads in. He wants to know if he's supposed to reuse the old shims or not. It doesn't sound like there's enough room for the shims, but I haven't seen it, so I don't know for sure. I would think he'd be fine without the shims, but I thought I'd get other opinions.

 

I am wondering the some thing. I changed mine a few months ago and didn't use them and now my brakes squeek like crazy.

 

^^I used the brake quiet and it didn't help I think it may be the pads. So I just purchased toyota pads.

 

An update to my original post. My dad talked to a guy at Advance and was told it would be ok to not use the shims. Also he found on Wagner's site that shims are not necessary for the pads he bought. Thanks for the responses.
