97 Tacoma clutch?

About how many miles will a clutch last? I've got 115k on mine and have noticed a churping sound from it, it goes away when you push the clutch in alittle and you can hear the churping sound when there is no load on the motor.

 

what motor? I have a 97 2.7 with 211k miles with stock clutch. They can last if your easy on the truck.

 

I sold my 96 with 205k on the original clutch, I put ~140k on the truck

 

My 97 is 4x4 with a 3.4 and I have been ruff on it a few times. My clutch went out at 158,000. I think the churping sound is the throw out bearing, my new one does it. I used a cheep clutch from a local parts store. I want to change it again with a centerforce clutch I have heard good things about them.

 

my 97 2.7 lasted till about 148k I guess the owners before me were non-drivers???

Sounds like you throwout bearing is going bad.

 

It's the 3.4V6 I've been easy on the truck it just started doing it and seems to go away on warm days don't know what difference that would make.

 

After messing with it more if I push the clutch in maybe a 1/2 inch the churping stops. Is there something that could be loose?

 

I have the same problem with mine currently. I think its the TOB. Same symptoms, clutch barely in it goes away, all the way out it chirps.

I drive my truck pretty hard so I know its coming. Just need to find the time to swap it all out.

 

Sounds like the noise you're getting could be related to the release bearing making contact with the pressure plate fingers while the clutch is disengaged.

Possible causes would include: Bent fork. Bent fingers. Misalignment. Warped pressue plate. Maybe a faulty slave cylinder. Bad bearing. Retainer might need a little lube.

 

Yep mine is the same way, once you put a load on the throw out bearing it quits. Time to throw it out...

 

How much will it cost to get it fixed? Or should I just let it go untill it breaks....I blame the city driving I have to do to get to work.

I was quoted around $600 - $700 to replace it.

That's when I decided to do it myself. Its not terribly hard, just need two people and the correct tools. It cost me about $230 for new clutch and I decided to buy a new flywheel too.

 

unfortunately im not a mechanic though. I wonder how long it would last as is.

The clutch seems to work fine expect that annoying cricket sound.

I don't understand why pressing the clutch in only a 1/2 inch would make the sound stop, I'm not pressing it in far anough to engage the clutch if anything mine has alot of free play in it.

 

It's your release/throwout bearing......don't worry about it, trust me. I push my clutch pedal in half an inch and the noise goes away also. I replaced my clutch out/release bearing at 150,000 and mine still does it. Don't worry about it until the clutch finally slips on you. You will know when it happens, but until it does, DRIVE DRIVE DRIVE. Its okay and it's not going to hurt anything.
