99 4wd reg cab 4cyl 5 speed....to buy or not to buy???

hey there...so i am looking at buying a single cab 4wd tacoma with 4 cyl eng and 5 speed tranny. the truck has 169k miles and i've got the guy down to about $6000 for the price. do you think its worth it??

also, what kind of gas mileage could i expect from this truck if i buy it? it's rollin 31" BFGs

i'm manly curious to as if this is a good deal or not. i sold my 95.5 ext cab v6 auto tranny with 128k miles about a year ago for $7500 with a lift and some mods so i'm just comparing this newer one to that truck that i sold. i know that since its a 4 cyl and regular cab is "less desirable" on the market, but after driving the truck it seems to fit what i'm looking for....thanks for reading and your advice!

 

As you can see from my sig, I'm a big fan of that particular combination. I got 25mpg from my 96 once, but that was under pretty ideal and not normal circumstances. They were both pretty consistent at 18-19 in town and 20-23 highway for mileage. I currently drive about 80% highway and 20% city with the 02 and depending on weather and such it's a toss up between 20 and 22. A lot of people will post much bigger numbers then that, but I believe it's due to getting a big number once and advertising that as your mileage.

 

cool thanks for posting...it was weird cause on my 95.5 v6 w/auto tranny i would get 15mpg no matter how i drove it either in city or on highway, lol...ONE time i drive down from denver to albuquerque (home) and got 26mpg...i was cruising at like 60mph following a trailer, but still i was shocked!

 

They are funny that way. That one good tank was actually on my first drive with my first taco. I lived down in middle GA at that point and bought the thing off of ebay in the middle of nowhere west virginia. Drove up with the wife (GF at that time) and picked it up. Headed back and was floored with the mileage it pulled down. Great trip! I think the 02 could pull down similar mileage if I could get some decent gas in it and go on a long trip. It definitely gets better mileage if I put 100% gas in it.

At least these trucks don't vary as much as my trailblazer though. The wife has gotten anywhere from 12-20mpg tanks with it...no rhyme or reason to it it seems.

 

bought the truck yesterday! already started doing a whole mess of maintenance items to it including oil change, plugs and wires, fuel filter, air filter, new synthetic fluids all around and seafoam FTW!

 

check out an AFE Pro Dry S air filter, & look into the deck plate mod, those should help get u more mpg! i love my taco btw! best of luck with urs!

 

you can do the deck plate mod to the 4 banger engine?? i knew you could with the v6, but not the 4 cyl...

what about removing the intake silencers? i'm taking about the little triangle shaped piece and that ugly black resonator box in the intake pipe...can those be replaced??

yeah, u can do the deck plate mod on the 4 cyl, i also took the ugly resonator box off too.
