4.56 or 4.88 ?

Hi, everyone, I want to regear my truck and am looking for info . Its a 98 xtra cab 4x4 2.7 . it came stock with 225/75/15 tires and 4.10 gearing . i am running 30" tire now and it is tall geared. I installed a trd limited slip and now want bigger tires. 4.56 or 4.88?? the guy at randys ring&pinion say 4.88 but this might be alittle to low ??? i don't want to rev the crap out of it everywhere i go. Let me know what some of you have done . i want to run 31,s like they are stock mabey 33,s but i would have to lift it higher than the 2" in now has. Thank,s for looking.

Run 33s, go with 4.88s, don't look back. I ran stock gears with 31's just fine, don't run 31s.... for teh love of god

Also to run 33's you don't need any more lift, just pinchweld mod, a hammer and 1 minute of your time

 

Depends on the tires you will be running, and assuming you want your
speedo/odo to read correctly on the highway.

4.56 is just right for 31's
4.88 is just right for 33's

 

Hey Supra TT what exactly is the pinch weld mod ?? I have many hammers . The way my truck is geared now it wouldn't push 31's very well , It is all it can handle with 30's.i just dont want to over gear it and would love to be near on the speedo also. 4.88s is perfect with 33s with your 2.7...

 

i agreen, i got 4.88s and 33s, but it revs high!!

to be just right with 4.10 stock gearing 4.56 for 33s and 4.88s for anything bigger.

Basically just beat down the pich weld until you don't rub anymore.

 

i agree its perfect, but it does not bring you back to stock with 33s. (i have 33s and 4.88s) it revs way higher than stock, but with the 4 banger its nice..

 

4.88s man. What I'm gonna get. Then 35s and turbo..haha

My '02 came factory spec; 4x4, 2.7 4 cyl, automatic, 265/70R-16 tires and with 4.56 gears...

These specs have treated me well for 10 years and 61000 miles ...

18-23 city ,25 highway on the mpgs and with the amount of off-road it has done...I've always made it home .......4 lo and 1st on the trannie can get the truck into places that make you think am I doing....

BUT if you are going to do this ONCE, they are giving good advice jumping up to 4.88's NOW IF

the 33's or larger are in your future.....Doing a gear swap ONCE saves serious $$$$$$$ for

OTHER "ideas/Mods"....

 

agreed, for 4 bangers with 33s i suggest 4.88s. but 4.56s brings it back to stock

 

Agreed 4.88. Regear once since you have to do the front also

 

I have a jeep as well as my taco and it is a 4 banger, I put 4.56 and it works fine. Unless you are a heavy offroader I would say go 4.56. I have 33's and am happy with the results. If I offroaded mainly then 4.88, however there really isn't a lot of difference between each gear ratio.

 

Well, not with the OP's truck......

On the OPs truck, 4.56s/33s would actually be higher than his stock ratio of 225s/4.10s. (About 100 -150 rpm less on the highway) Whereas 4.88s would only add about 30 rpm to highway driving and bring him almost back to stock.....

But, if you're going to re-gear, might as well go a little lower. Think about where the power band on our trucks is.... when you're at speed in a higher rpm band, you don't need as much throttle to make it stay at speed which means less gas. Of course you can't go too far, but that's my reasoning for the idea that it's ok to go a little lower wwhen re-gearing... (plus you get some nice acceleration!!! haha)

His stock ratio does seem a bit low to me, but if that's what we're going off of, these are the numbers.

According to the calculator I posted:
Stock (4.10s/225s) = about 2,691 rpm at 65 mph

4.56s/33s = about 2,565 rpm at 65 mph

4.88/33s = about 2,745 rpm at 65pmh

Awsome info guy's I have some deciding to do. Everyone say's 33,s but i still might just do 31,s because my offroading is mainly mild and hunting so i,m not sure yet but this is the best response i could have hoped for . Thanks again for all the info. Keep it comeing its great.

 

4.88s on 31s would suck to drive on the hwy! haha be at 3k or higher for 65mph..
