Signs of a bad water pump?

What are the signs of a bad water pump my truck is leaking antifreeze from somewhere? I have 149,000 so I'm thinking my water pump us going bad? How can i tell?

 

Try to target where the leak is coming from? if its from beneath the pulleys at the front of the engine?

 

Dunno its dripping off the back of the skid plate. Im going to take it off in the morning and try to figure out. Does antifreeze usually leek from somewhere if the water pump is going bad?

 

yes, there is a weep hole on the pump itself

 

I dunno, does it do something like this?

 

How bad would it leak if it did come out of the peep hole? Antifreeze has been disappearing for a few weeks.

Welp that could possibly be it. Bout time to change the water pump anyways!!

 

id go ahead and replace the water pump and if you havent already the timing belt too

 

Yeah im going to. I checked the timing belt and it looked brand new compared to the new one i had so i didn't replace it.

They can leak when it's cold outside and stop when the engine gets warm. Makes it hard to find the leak, the weep hole is a good place to start.

 

also check to make sure those stupid hose clamps arent leaking, mine leak when the coolant is warm and stops when it cools

 

That makes sense. It was running cold when it was leaking and its freezing here now lol

 

Had the same issue at around 90-100k miles, losing coolant (at a slow rate) and nothing on ground.

Took the Taco in for a new timing belt and water pump since it was due. Mechanic discovered a small leak between the water pump and engine block. Because it has been leaking for some time, the leak path started to erode the block where it mated with the pump.

Mechanic attempted to use some kind of sealant as a band-aid fix since replacing the block isn't an option. It lasted just a short time and started losing coolant again.

I put in some Bars Radiator Stop Leak and it worked for almost 2 years, no coolant loss. Just recently, I'm starting to lose coolant again.. maybe a few ounces every few weeks.

 

I found the problem it's leaking out of the heater valve.
