I've been looking for a good used tacoma and haven't found many in my price range, but I stumbled upon this one Im thinking about making an offer on.
It's an 01 Xtracab Tacoma, green, 2.7L auto. It was used as a work truck and has 102,000 miles on it, the body looks good, just a few dents, but the interior is very rough and was used hard. Im yet to drive it because the lot was closed.
My problem is with the rust on the frame, I don't know enough to tell if its a problem or if it could get worse, but as far as I'm aware Toyota's extended warranty on the frames didn't cover into 2001.
Any advice I could get form the images below would be much appreciated, is the rust a problem or am I over reacting?

Looks like just surface rust at spots. Seems like the frame is in fairly good condition, it may have been sprayed when the recall came out

Tap on it with a ball peen hammer.

Looks like bad surface rust but hard to tell.

If you buy it go at it with wire wheels and rust killer then paint it all nice and good.

seen better frames and ive seen worse. be careful if it is covered under the frame recall and it fails they take the truck and give u a time and a half the KBB value of the truck.

    doesn't look terrible IMO..

The rust "recall" covers Tacomas up to 2004.
Enter your VIN# on this website --> http://www.toyota.com/recall/ to determine if it falls under the extended warranty. If so, have it inspected at a Toyota dealership (its free) before you buy it. GL :)

Well since the first 3 responses to your question are not accurate, how about doing some reading on Toyota frame rust and then you'll know how to proceed. Here are about 500 threads on the same subject:

95.5-00 toyota buys it back and crushes it

01-04 toyota gives you a new frame

so buy it and get it inspected, if it fails you'll get a new frame

I ran the VIN on Toyota's website, this was the only thing that came up

"There are no open Special Service Campaigns or Safety Recalls on your vehicle."

Should I still assume its covered under the warranty extension?

Remember not every frame for those model years was bad but because Toyota couldn't pin down which frames they all got inspected. I live in the land of the heavily salted road and after 11 years on these roads mine passed when it was brought in. Looks like you have a bit of surface rust though, with mine I clean it up apply Rust Mort then some por15 on the outside and spray oil on the inside, hopefully I'll get 10 more years out of it.

Your 01 will not be covered in the frame replacement program if the owner didn't have the treatment done. If it was sprayed then your covered....

95.5-00 toyota buys it back and crushes it

01-04 toyota gives you a new frame (if it was treated)
