I have done all the hi-pro mods for a life time, since I got this truck at a great price, I will be happy with showroom new.
well like mine I would change all the fluids, oil, grease, ect.
just make a list of everything in the owners manual.

as far as engine, if you have no idea of past service history, how is it running, if something is wrong, the tacoma's are good at letting you know, with a check engine light.

and if you have the 3.4 you would be near the mileage of a timing belt change.
    opps you have the 3.4
the timing belt is something you need to think about.

According to his truck info by the avatar, it is a V6. At 187k miles Toyota recommends the following:

    Replace:
    Air filter
trans fluid and filter (automatic) OR
    trans gear oil (manual)
    coolant
    differential fluids
    engine oil & filter
    spark plugs
    transfer case fluid
    and
    Rotate tires

This is assuming all regular maintenance to this point has been done.

Thanks ^ and everyone else. I really appreciate it. It is a v6. Yeah I guess they have been running it pretty hard offroading around Maui. Its cool though, I think it has a ton of potential. Any other suggestions for a new project tacoma, completely stock? I'm here to learn haha.

well these trucks are very easy to work on, (in my opinion) ( and opinions are like assholes everybody has one) take your time and really go over the truck, while there are lots of mods you can do, a really good maintenance overhaul could make the truck last, without a breakdown.

Considering your location (near salt water) look for signs of rust, and paint-over. Lift hood, look around inner fender wells, under the bed, etc.
