Simple performance upgrades

I have a 2004 Base Tacoma 2.4.. If I need a lil better performance what should I start with.. What do you guys have?? Can I see some pictures? Can anyone help out please.

 

Lets just say Toyotas are for reliability/dependability, not so much performance. They can perform in the manner that you'll pretty much always make it home. Since yours is the 5 lug your not doing heavy trail ride, I would upgrade your suspension, maybe look into the Supercharger if your getting serious? Search through the 5 lug section. This is just my .02 cents.

I consider always making it home an excellent performance. That's me though.

 

Oh, also, I'm not too sure but since yours is the 5 lug and your not seeing to much dust, or mud, etc, the deck plate mod for minimal if any HP and increase sound and throttle. Anyone else can chime in with their opinion.

 

thanks I think your absolutely right my truck is very reliable and thats great.. I might just keep it stock for reliability and that works for me for right now

 

Only things you can do are

Deck plate mod

Maybe new muffler.


But Toyota did a great job optimizing the performance already. Only other option is TRD supercharger and URD add ons. Or custom turbo. Neither are cheap. But they do give a big boost in performance.

But that's it.

 

Im interested in the Deck Plate Mod.. Can you give me more info?? Pictures or just an explanation of what that consist of??

Lightweight fly wheel,

new more powerful clutch,

Deck plate,

LCEngineering or Doug Thorly Headers,

Magnaflow 18 inch oval 2.25 in and out muffer welded to stock piping,

URD or LCengineering short shift kit for 5 speeds only,

New stiffer front and rear shocks and possibly mild lowering springs,

keeping tires at proper pressure,

Steel braided brake lines for better stopping power,

grease all of your zerk fittings and make sure all of your gear oil is clean,

if needed replace your O2 sensors and TPS as they tend to go bad over time and can cause a lack in performance and mileage.

After owning my Tacoma now for 2 years, coming from a 2005 Subaru WRX STi, this is what I have learned.

1.) The Tacoma is a 3,500 lb. underpowered truck. However, the power band is right around 4,800 RPMs, which is perfect for what this truck was designed for which is low-to-mid range power and torque for climbing, towing, pulling, and off road conditions.

2.) That being said, this truck will never be fast, and it will never get amazing gas mileage.

3.) You can spend $1,000 on "performance" mods, and you'll still be disappointed so just enjoy the truck for what it is. A solid, bullet-proof, reliable truck that is well respected for its history. The sooner you realize everything I mentioned above, the happier you'll be with the truck.

 

No mod you are going to do to the 2.4 is going to "Wow" you.

Before you waste a nickel on a "performance" mod, consider a new vehicle, or an engine swap (think LSX)
