Differential help

hey guys help me out please,
can i put a 2004 tacoma rear e-locker into a 2001 tacoma prerunner 4x2 3.4l engine, without any modification, and if there is mods needed what are they? also what size rearend is in it stock a 7.5 or 8. thanks a lot guys

 

The short answer is 'no -not within reason'. The detailed answer is 'well, yes - but the extensive modification work isn't worth it'.

The TRD e-locker is based on the older pre-Tacoma 'V6/Turbo' 8" differential. The 2001 PreRunner uses the newer so-called '8.4' differential (a different species of 8" differential). Inner components aren't swappable from the old V6/Turbo into the 8.4 without modifying / machining the differential housing.

If I recall correctly, there's a tech writeup on modifying an '8.4' unit to install the e-locker at another Tacoma site (4X4Wire? YotaTech? TTORA?). Among other things it requires machining the housing / carrier to accept the other species' 'innards'. Bottom line - it's one of those mods that's good for techie bragging rights but not economically justifiable.

so in your opinion what would be the best to put in there, i just want some better traction in back, and a part number would be helpful too please. I was thinking about the detroit locker or detroit trutrac? any take on either?

 

What? 04 trd rear locker axle is exactly the same as the 01 trd rear locker axle, same exact drivetrains/ axle parts are the same

 

The axle codes are 94-2004 on trucks 1st digit is diameter A=7.5. B=8" 2nd&third is gear ratio 01=3.583. 02=3.727. 03=4.100 04=4.556 or 4.300 05=. 4.700 06=4.875 or3.909 and the fourth digit is number of pinions A.=2 B=4 C=2 pinion OEM limited slip. Thus the numbers on your truck. ON THE DOOR PLATE will tell you what it ace with. Examples A01A= 7.5" 3.583 2WD. Or. B04A = 8". 4.556 2WD. Or. B06B= 8" 4.875 4x4 limited slip. Hope this helps

 

if your gonna go with aftermarket and daily drive your truck and dont wanna spend the dough for arb air locker, most deff go detroit truetrac, hands down the best locking limited slip there is, its gear driven so there are no clutches to wear out and it lock up great, i love mine and u cant even tell its there on the highway, pretty much a street friendly locker in my opinion, it has got me thru a lot of sticky situations and performed perfectly, u want be disapointed with it
