Ignition Switch
 
Hello,

I have a 96 Tacoma SR5 V6 4x4 with 262xxx Miles. There is no light comes on. The Ignition Switch was bad and every time I turned the Engine off, I could not turn the Ignition Switch to the Lock position so I could not pull the key out. I left the key in there in the ACC position for several days and the Battery was out then I could turned to the Lock position and pulled the key out as normal. Yesterday I just bought a new Ignition Switch from Toyota Dealer to replace it. Also I recharged the Battery, but after I finished installing the new Ignition Switch, I tested it and it worked fine, but it did the same thing as it did before with the new Ignition Switch. Do you have any idea why? I need your help please.

It sometime works fine, but sometime it does not. Did any of you have the same or similar problem as I do now?

Yeah, it's automatic transmission.

I found out, not 100% sure, the problem is the key interlock solenoid.

I had the same problem and found the shift lock control switch was bad. The transmission didn't know it was in park and wouldn't let the key turn to the off position. I umounted the console at the base of the gear shift and bypassed the switch; remounted the console and the ignition switch works fine now.

The only side effect is: you can shift out of park without having to depress the brake pedal and you can turn off (and remove) the key from the switch while the gear shift is in any position. Not necessarily a bad thing, just mentioning it.

Great. It's a good reminding.

I removed the front cover (under the steering wheel) and unbolted the Key Interlock Solenoid for several days now and it works fine. In this case, can I just leave it unbolt and put the front cover back in? Is it safe?

It shouldn't hurt anything. If the connector has any exposed contacts, tape them to prevent a short circuit and it shouldn't be a problem.

Lol, you and I operated on opposite ends of the same circuit: shiftlock control ecu sends impulse signal to the key interlock solenoid.
