Hey Tacoma World, just joined this forum a few months ago.

Long time lurker, first time poster here.

Been in search of a 1st gen Tacoma for a good 4-5 months and I've been close to buying one a few times. However, i've been on the hunt for what seems to be the incredibly elusive(in my area anyways) Double Cab 4X4. I finally found one a few days ago, 230xxx kms, TRD Off Road. Looks to be completely stock, well taken care of etc.

His asking price is $11000. Anyone have advice and or tips on buying a used Tacoma with this kinda mileage? Any noticeable differences between Xtra Cab and Double Cab? (besides cosmetic).

I don't wanna buy the truck based on my love for double cabs, but feel free to help me make up my mind :D I know there a few of you double cab lovers on this forum. ;)

    Thanks!

$11,000 seems kind of high. I paid $12,100 for my extended cab with 118,000 miles.

Some days I wish I had a double cab, and some days I'm glad I have my extended cab. Just get a double cab if it's what you want, you'll regret it and be happy with it at different times.

Good point. I just can't help but think 4 doors would come in real handy for what i would use it for.

    Also remember it's Km's not Miles. 228000 Km's is about 140000 Miles.

If it is in good shape I don't think he is far off. I paid $10,400 for my '03 DC that I just recently bought (TRD Prerunner SR5). It was in good shape with 113k miles. I paid him exactly what the dealer offered for it as a trade in. Yours would have a couple more miles, but is a year newer.

Only thing is mine is an AZ truck so there is ZERO rust. I know the frames of these trucks seem to be a little sensitive to rust.

I can't live without 4 doors and haven't regreted the decision at all.

Same truck in CA would likely go for $12K to $15K, no joke. Just to give you some perspective.

BTW, I LOOOVVVEE my DC TRDOR 4x4. They are super rare (to buy) around here too. Best of luck.

in SoCal at least, they're pretty rare, sell rather quickly and are a bit ridiculously priced. Dealers charge around $14-$17K for a TRD DC 4x4 ~160K. I waited over 6 months without any luck finding one under $14K private party.

Just do a compression check, leak down test & look over the exhaust system...the cats are prone to wear.

    Thanks for your help guys.

I went to see the truck yesterday and it was in real rough shape, you can tell the owner abused the hell out of it, using it for work n such. Tons of rust on the frame, dirty inside, pretty much the opposite of what you would call a clean truck. Not to mention it wasn't insured so i couldn't take her for a test drive.

So i passed on it, i don't even think it would've been worth the inspection cost.

    My search continues...

Intelligent choice. Its definitely not worth it with all the rust and all. I bought my truck for 15k with 77,000 miles.

Without the rust and other damages, it might have been a good deal.

    Good luck!

It's the toughest thing to let one slip by, but you did the right thing. Especially since you could tell it hadn't been taken care of. I bought my '01 DC SR5 TRD FOR $7000. But mine is 2wheel drive, and had 163,000 miles. For some perspective, I'm a dealer and bought my truck from Craigslist. Dealers will pay top dollar for these trucks (especially DC and 4WD). A truck like the one you were describing would go for $10K easy, plus 145,000 miles is nothing for these trucks, if they are taken care of.

Keep looking and good luck! From my experience... Buy from a private party, dealers will make you pay! Get records if you can. I was blessed to buy from an honest guy who took great care of the truck.

Post pics when you find yours!
