wheel offset for running 285's

Hey guys I'm new to the forum world, I just bought a 2001 Tacoma crew cab TRD and love it. The guy I bought it from had some wheel spacers that didn't fit right on it to clear the upper A arms for the 285's on it. I had one front wheel almost fly off on me on the way home ! It has a 3 inch suspension lift. I don't really like wheel spacers and want to run those same tires so what OFFSET will I need on new rims to clear those upper arms with those tires ? Explain, please...

Need to know thickness of wheel spacers that you are not using anymore...

Then I can tell you what backset you need for everything to work, stock is 4.5"BS, subtract the width of the removed spacer (1", 1.25", 1.50" or ??)

Subtract spacer thickness from standard 4.5"BS....ie, 4.5" - 1.25" = 3.25" (just an example), so that would be the BS you need for the new rims to clear UCA, obviously, that figure will change if the spacers are a different thickness...

* there are other sizes of 285's as well... say 17"
and could require a different off set/BS.

285/75/16 =

BS = 4.0" - 3.75"

off set -11

But that's specific to the wheels I chose to use.
Off set can vary... dependent of the wheel's center chunk coning (design specs).

Not every wheel is the same.

* trial fit any wheel first... before installing the tire.
then it can be returned unused if it is incorrect.

 

Thanks guys, The spacers he had on were 1.5" but it ended up being the rims that were wrong. It has the American racing 16 in mojave teflon wheels with nitto grapplers a/t 285/75/16. The rims center hole was smaller than the spacers lip and this D-Bag mounted them on there by just a few threads since it was sitting on just the outer portion of that lip. I think they are F150 rims ? Any ways I really like the tires and just want the right Backspacing / offset for new rims that will clear the UCA. I'm thinking of going with the XD Hoss wheels 16x8 or the pro comp 7089 black wheels, but want to make sure I can mount them with out the spacers and will clear the UCA. I really dont like the idea of spacers. I've had buddies with bad experiences. so what do you think ?

 

I just read alot of other threads and they are saying 4.5" b/s with 0 offset on an 8" rim to fit perfect with out spacers? any comments

 

I run 4 inch.. no spacers and plenty of room between tire and upper arm...no rubbing either

 

4" will look the best, 4.5" is the most backspace you can have in order to clear the UCA's...
