Seriously though, when is the last time you changed your gear oil? Mine was difficult getting into 1st and 3rd and after changing the oil, shifting is much easier. Beyond that, it could be your shifter seat not allowing you to fully shift in that direction.

Synchros could be shot. I had a Mitsubishi truck that lost 3rd and afterdraining the fluid and seeing too many metal flakes and then taking off thecover allowed me to see a synchro that had broken apart. However, in your caseit may not be a synchro but a shift fork, can also be a shifter ball that has disintegratedcausing too much slack, which can cause engagement issues.

Drain the oil into an empty pan and look for foreign material like brassflakes and/or pieces.

Common result of a shift rail issue, or detent ball. However extremely dirty trans fluid can cause issues like this as well. Is it just really difficult to get it in those gears, resulting in you having to force it, or will it just not go in those gears at all, any time? (driving, sitting still, engine on or off, etc)

Found it, it was the plastic bushing on the end of the shifter. Thanks for the comments though.

Marlin Crawler makes a replacement cup made out of a more durable material.

I may need to get that fix from MC. My shifter is a bit sloppy.

This discussion may fit my problem. My 97 4x4 w/ 2.7L 4 cyl and 5-speed manual has become difficult to shift to 1st only. This trans. has been super smooth for over 200K miles. I replaced the clutch at engine overhaul at 180K. The problem has only just begun and is intermittent. I thought it might be the blocker rings in the synchro. I'm a mechanic but have never touched a manual trans. I could also use some help finding an overhaul manual for the trans.

manual trans are very easy. start a new thread asking for this info and well go from there. best not to revive old threads when unnecessary. :)

Check the shifter seat and bushing. These are easy parts to replace - see the link above to the Marlin Crawler kit.

I tried to install the Marlin Crawler seat and bushing today but the wiring clip that connects the push button 4wd on the t-case knob would not release. I couldn't get enough room to work under the whole boot/floor plate assembly without detaching that wire. I don't know if it's just fused together with 18 years of baked-in dirt and grime or what. Anybody have any tricks to get that wire clip separated?

Yes I did but it didn't help. I might just have to cut the wire and put in a new clip. I haven't been able to find any info on the wire or the clip online. The guys at Marlin Crawler hadn't heard of anybody having the same problem. I wonder if my wire is shorter than normal so I can't just take the knob off and slide the whole boot/plate assembly up enough to do the job.
