air conditioning question

Recently I've been hearing a squeal coming from my air conditioning compressor that gets louder as the engine revs higher. I dont think its a belt problem, its faily new, but if i find that an adjustment in the pulleys does not fix the problem, is it ok for now to just remove the belt and leave the compressor disengaged?
Apologies if this isnt descriptive enough, but I'll answer any questions that may help.

 

Check your idler pulley. The bearing in that pulley blew out on my truck and caused the belt to snap. If the pulley isn't turning with the belt it squeals.

It cost me about $45 to replace the pulley and the belt....did it myself.

 

does it ever stop or only stop when you turn off the air

Toy4Life: I'll look into the idler pulley and mention it to my (small town) mechanic. I really dont think he's that adept at working on toyota's. I think i trust him but i'm becoming concerned for my wallet. I get the impression that he doesnt enjoy spending time diagnosing, and is a "order the part remove and replace" kind of guy, and unfortunately my job has most of my time well taken up.

If your problem is the same as what I said, the cheapest parts were at autozone/advanced autoparts.

Hi there. Sorry for the slow response but I work shifts away from town so i only found yesterday about my AC.

So it turned out to be a part within the idler pulley itself. My mechanic told me it would cost $15 so I think its just the bearing. The pulley itself is not being replaced. I guess its not so bad considering I'm facing hard decisions regarding my knock sensor.
I've been pulling the P0330 code off and on for a few months now, saved up to have it replaced, but recently found that my mechanic wants to change both knock sensors while he's in there! What i still want to know is, would I receive the same code if my engine were indeed knocking? I really am losing my mind over this one and i dont know what to do. All I know is that Im getting the P0330 code, and my timing is being retarded, AND every time I talk to Toyota about this is wasted time.

The dealership told me I couldn't replace just the bearing in the pulley, I could only replace the whole pulley. You're reasoning on the knock sensor sounds logical, but I don't know the answer for sure.
