Whats up guys, I'm new here and am getting ready to sell my 94 Z71 and looking to get a 95-02 Tacoma. I'm pretty new to these trucks and hope to gain a little knowledge before picking one up. First of all I'm getting a 5 speed, and want to know how the 2.7 compares to the 3.4 gas mileage wise. I know the engines can last forever, but what kind of power can I expect with 31-33" tires? Also, is there anything to look out for in the 1st Gen. models. Thanks in advance guys.

There really isnt much of a gas milage difference from the 2.7L to the 3.4L because the 2.7L has to work a lot harder than does the 3.4L, so it burns just as much fuel even though its a smaller engine.
Both are good engines though that should last you at least 200,000 miles.
If you want to put bigger tires on it, Id suggest the 3.4L because it has more torque and horsepower than the 2.7L, which is going to help with big tires. Id also suggest regearing if you plan on putting bigger tires on it. If you stick with the stock gearing (I think they came with 4.10s), you are going to put a lot more stress on the transmission.

Watch out for frame rust.... inspect the frame and POKE at it too. There are issues with interior frame rust. Toyota has extended their rust perforation warrantee. Lots of folks with older tacomas are getting big bucks for their tacos with frame rust.

If you find one with frame rust - buy it for a song & dance, then perhaps toyota will honor it under the rust perforation warrantee.

<do some more research on that....>

Yeah I have been seeing talk about the rust on here and hopefully this one is still pretty good. I found a 97 with the 5 speed and 2.7 extended cab 4 wheel drive with 125000 miles for $8600. Is that a pretty decent price? Like I said I'm getting out the V8 game for a year or two and dont know much about these trucks.

They actually came with a bunch of gear ratios for those years. From 3:58 to 4:56.

Josh, The truck you are looking at, see if it has a "BO7A" code near the vin. Thats the 4:30 gears and they really give the 2.7 some pep! :)

I dont know, but it seems a little high in price to me. You wont be able to know what gears are in it untill you can see it in person. Or have the owner send you the gear code. :)

Thats true, I emailed the place with a couple questions and I'm waiting on that..These trucks are kind of hard to get a hold to down here.
