DIY AC Filter for less than $2.00

My A/C was very tired and barely blowed any air at all so I decided to check on the filter and found this



Immediately after removal of the OEM filter, the A/C got alive again so obviously my neglect of the filter was the problem.

I called pepboys and they wanted $36.00 + tax, called Advance and they wanted $28.00 + tax, called dealer and they wanted $25.00 + tax, I was not paying that much cash for a air filter and remembered reading somewhere in the boards about a guy making one from a home filter so I went to the local hardware store and got for $2.59 + tax a 3M 12" x 24" x 1" filtrete designed for home and commercial use of heater and A/C applications.

Carefully removed the cardboard frame and trim the filter 8" wide and 10" long, just put it in the chamber and it now has a new disposable filter for less than $2.00 since I still got material for another filter.

The filter states that it's good for 3 months of home use, so replacing it every few months when dirty should be very easy and cheap to do.

If you haven't check your filter, do so and rejuvenate the A/C to all it's glory and save some money in the process.

 

Whats the exact part number of the filter you picked up? I like that material and might try that when my other home made filter needs replacing.

Only markings similar to Part # are 9820 in a sticker on the back side,

By cutting it 10" long it fits snug in the chamber and seals the whole chamber pretty good.
