Suggestion on a bed cover?

Hi,
I just purchased a new Tacoma Crew cab short bed 4x4, and the first thing I would like to get is either a fold up or roll up bed cover. I don't want a full cap or hard tonnea cover.
I have looked at BAK, which I like, but I also see the Paragon unit and others.
I live in the NE, which translates to snow and cold, and I would like it to be reasonably tough, and hopefully, the flaps will be waterproof. The BAK seems to be the only one that fits this requirement, but maybe not.
I don't think a roll up will work, as with the dark color, even in the winter the snow will melt a little, and then refreeze, which will probably make the roll up feature totally useless.
I'm going to order the unit online and install it myself, so it's impossible to see the quality beforehand.
So I'd like to hear from the guys who have already purchased one.

I can't say I live in cold weather, but I do know there is a warranty with Extang and their covers. If I had the money to buy one again I would. I loved this cover. I had an extang cover on my Nissan Hard Body but with the snap push button style. The one pictured on my tacoma was a zip lock style cover with 3 supports across the bed. Check them out. The price is reasonable. I purchased mine for $200 on autoanything.com's website. Good luck.

For security purposes primarily, I want to stay away from fabric. I've had one, and i didn't like it up here. I prefer either aluminum or composite.

I have the Extang trifold, I love it. I'm in MA and it works great in the winter.

 

I have the Fold A Cover G4 and it really like it. Never had a problem with water getting in here in Oregon.

 

I live in New England and have this cover, purchased from autoanything. It holds up just fine in the snow. with any vinyl cover, if you roll them up in the winter, they're tough to stretch back in place since they shrink in the cold. Best to wait for a warmer day, or let it lay in the sun then they'll go back on easily. I've had vinyl covers on every pick-up I've ever owned in New England and have never had an issue with them. They keep things fairly dry but they're not water tight, at least I haven't found them to be. A little water trickles in at the corners, especially with the Tacoma since the tailgate and front of the bed sits lower than the rails.

 

I have an extang trifecta....love it! I live in snowy upstate NY and it has been great for over 4 years.

4 years and works great in all conditions & folds up even in sub zero temps unlike those snap ons which are near impossible to re-connect in cold weather. lol.

The cover has seen heavy snow as well (36"+). I push it off and the rest melts off. Sometimes, ice does build up next to the cab & will rattle. For some reason, that spot catches the snow off the roof & settles. I think any cover would do that.

Vote for trifecta here.

How was the install on the Fold-a-Cover? Any drilling required?

 

No drilling.
Look under "product reviews" from back in March of this year on the Fold A Cover G4. There's also some comments in there from a good vendor, Truck Alterations, where I bought mine.

 

I have the Access Limited Edition Roll-up. It works awesome! and the mounting is nice and clean. Haven't had my truck in the winter yet so i can't comment on that. Purchased from Truckalterations.

 

i have the trifecta. Had to modify the seal next to the cab a bit to prevent leaks in the corners.
