Pardon the ignorance, what is color sand? Is that a wet sand?

really no need to color sand. Just polish the clear coat.

That's what I'm looking to do, except just the surround. I'm going to leave the center and triangles black. I did a test on the center emblem and want to get that right before I tackle the whole grille.

    Looks good by the way

You don't have to take it off. I used 600 grit sandpaper to rough it up, then primed and painted over it.

My experience: I had a spoiler painted for one of my previous cars. When I took it to the bodyshop they brought out a paint card that must have had 20 different shades of white. next to each shade of paint was a cut out so they could lay it on my WHITE paint and see which one was the closest. I pointed out that I wanted them to use the factory paint code not just eye ball it and they said that they did use the factory paint code and that gets them close but each OEM color has ~6 shades of paint to choose from. Needless to say the color match was perfect... So I'm not sure if you could just give a color code w/out them seeing the part.

My other experience was w/ a bumper I had to replace. They wouldnt go strictly off of color code from the factory. they kept my gas door cover to match it from. All worked out perfect from them.

Lastly, I was looking at a brand new silver taco at the dealer last week while I was having warranty work done on my wifes rig... and low and behold... the silver grill did not match the hood perfectly. Dont know why but it seemed to be off just slightly. maybe it was the viewing angle. maybe it was just me... who knows. But it made me think twice about painting my chrome grill surround cause thats what i was thinking about doing too.

Painted plastic body parts almost never match steel painted body panels perfectly. Close inspection of the Tacoma's painted fender flares in certain light conditions will reveal this as well. It also shows up more in certain colors.

This could be where I went wrong. I ordered my paint online with just a paint code off the door. I guess I kinda figured white would be one of the easier colors to match. The base color coat matches very well, it was the clear coat that yellowed it out a little. I used a polishing compound and it made it significantly better, probably as good as it'll get with a rattle can. Fortunately I have a grille guard to kind of mask it a little but for future things, I think I've learned my lesson. On the upside, at least the chrome is gone!
