285/75/16 Spare Mount

Just wanted to share how i mounted my spare in the bed of tacoma. I ended up
using a carabiner, 3'' x 1/2 threaded eye bolt, 1 nut, 2 washers and a wing nut. All from the hard ware store. Less than $20....canadian.

The carabiner clips on to the bed rail tie down with the eye bolt attached to the carabiner. I put the spare were i wanted it and threaded the eye bolt through on of the lug nut holes. I used the 1/2'' nut on the threaded eye bolt as a jam nut, then put a washer, then the spare, then the other washer and finally the wing nut. It takes a bit of bed space but all in all work great.

you know what. i thought it would too. but it has not move at all. those tie downs say they can hold 220lbs. so if guys trust their dirt bike to them, i'm sure a spare will be ok. i dont go jumping in the sand like the LT guys, for the stuff i do i'm sure it's cool.

 

Nice work!! I like the idea, but only good if you have a shell.

Wasn't there a thread on here about how to make a 285 fit in the factory location too?

thank. ya i guess it would be best with a shell. but it may work with out. maybe someone will give it a try.

i read that thread too. thats were i was going to put it. but after i cut off the tabs like the thread said. i found that once it was up there it was touching the exhaust. im not sure how much space others had but i didnt want to cut my exhaust off to make it work. found this to be the next best thing for me. so far so good.

 

I agree on the exhaust thing. Nothing worse than a burned tire when you already have a flat. Which is why I haven't made the attempt to try it yet.

I'm more concerned with someone stealing the tire from the bed. Maybe fabricate a lock for it?

 

I really dont trust them at all, I used them once for one bike and then I found a better way

 

i thought about putting a lock on it, still might do that. but when i installed my alarm i put a magnetic switch on the back glass of my canopy, so im not to worried about it.
i figure if someone really want the spare that bad they should just flat bed the truck and grab the whole thing.
