Tire Choice Advice

I have a double cab trd truck and am about to change tires for the first time.. i am right over 40,000 miles...... I had the TSB done in the rear for the springs so i added the 5100's in the front and had matching spring put in the back... it has lifted my truck some.... just wondering if there is an option to got alittle bigger tire? What will it do gas mileage wise with a bigger tire? Will it throw my speedometer off?

 

265/75/16 will correct your speedometer and make it accurate (so I've heard).

 

I think a lot of the gas mileage loss is due to the larger rotating mass of the bigger tires in addition to their increased profile. If you are seriously concerned with your MPG then be honest with yourself about your driving style/conditions and try to balance looks, performance and value.

I forgot ad. My 255/85/16 (actual 33s) Did not change my mpgs at all. They are Cooper Discover S/T (not STT).

Confirmed, at least for the 17" size.

When my stock tires were ready for replacement, I put on 265/70/17's and this put my speedo right on the button.

265/70/17 Duratrac, speedo is now correct, fuel milage is around 17.5-18 mpg just a few tanks so far. remember right now you speedo is telling you went further than you actually did so you mileage is inflated ( 4% IIRC )

Actually the math will show you are getting less MPG with a larger tire. That's why so many people claim they get lower MPG with larger size tires......

The larger tire has a longer rolling circumference, and over a full tank of gas, you will travel a longer distance than what the odmeter is actually reading.

I did the math about a year ago calculating the actual number of rotations of the stock tire size (265/65/17 vs 265/70/17), and from what I remember there was about a 5-7% difference between the mileage shown on the odmeter, and the actual calculated mileage using the rolling circumference of the tire. After doing the math to figure my MPG, and then adding the % differental, my acutal MPG was exactly what it was with the stock size tires.

A lot of people say going to a larger tire will lower your mileage, and I guess if the size difference is large enough it will, but going from a 265/65/17 to a 265/70/17 made no difference in MPG for me.

 

You are correct, I worded it wrong. I see the same thing, mileage now is the same as the corrected mileage when the odometer was incorrect.

 

Pay attention to tire diameter and weight. If you don't go too large on the diameter or too heavy on the tire weight you should be ok.
The stock tires are around 30.5 diameter and weight is around 36 lbs depending on tire. Going 1.0-1.5 inches larger in diameter will usually correct the speedo. I think Toyota probably figured a large percentage of drivers would put a larger than stock tire on so they put a gear in to account for that.
Lastly, unless you plan on doing some heavy hauling or serious mudding stay away from load range E or 10 ply rated tires. You start looking at some serious weight differences which will ultimately drag down the fuel mileage and power. Just because the tires look scary/awesome on your rig doesn't mean you should actually have them.
