I was driving the other day and saw a tacoma (standard bed) hauling two dirt bikes. Unfortunately we were going opposite directions so I wasn't able to see how he had them tied down. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have installed the d-rings in the front of the bed so I have two good places to hook the straps.

    Easy - get a long bed. :p

Actually, I helped a friend load up two Honda 250s in his short bed. We had them secured to each other and secured to the bed. Plus, he had a cut up some 2x4s to act as channels for the front wheels on the bikes.

...forgot to mention, we had one facing forward and the other face the rear.

I thought standard bed was the long bed. Regardless, the one I saw was a standard bed (long bed) access cab, same as mine.

The two I saw loaded in the tacoma were both facing forward.

Ah, yes - I didn't see that you had an Access Cab. It shouldn't be too hard. The setup is going to depend on the bikes and what you have available to secure them.

    What I normally do:

    1) Put 1st bike in and secure it to the front rail and the floor.
    2) Put 2nd bike in and secure to floor and first bike.
    3) Resecure the 1st bike to the floor and the second bike.

I go a bit overboard on the securing straps, but I would rather not pay the state money for cleaning up bike parts on the side of the road.

Thanks. I have a KTM 250 XC and my brother has a 300 XC. Do you have any worries using the front rail or do you secure the two bikes to each other as well? On my last taco (2005 TRD Access cab) I had one of the rail hooks come out once without a whole lot of force. That has me a little gun shy I guess.

hmm... I would be concerned about that rail hook too, but they aren't really meant to take too much force directly outward. I would inspect that hook and see if you can't recreate the situation so that you can know what not to do next time.

Each setup is different depending on the bikes and the straps you have. I try to go to the floor and bike-to-bike only. On occasion, I have have used the rails to steady the setup. The front rail is especially helpful if you are going to the handlebars.

Just remember to secure the wheels in place. The higher you secure a bike, the more chance you run of having the wheels move out from underneath it. (aka - bad)

I ended up having to haul two bikes on Saturday, it wasn't by choice but another rider hurt his back so I gave him a ride home and cut my ride short. I was holding everyone up anyway since I am still in the learning phase and there were some pretty nasty technical climbs with a lot of leaves on them.

I used the d-ring to the outward facing end of the handlebar on the inside of the grip of each bar using straps. I hooked the inside of each bar to one of the sliding rail hooks. Both bikes rode pretty secure to his house (about 30 miles from where we were riding) where I unloaded his bike and headed home. I didn't mess with mine.

About one mile from my house (one mile from the other guys house as well) I went around a little turn and my bike fell over into the bed. The front wheel turned to the side a little and there wasn't enough of an angle on the outside strap to keep the bike from falling. Luckily the bike did not fall on the bed rail or on the outside of the bed. The only damage I ended up with was a broken sliding rail hook that my bark buster landed on. I would say I was pretty lucky.

I think it's time to order at least one wheel chock. The wheel chock I have now requires drilling so I think I will just leave it on my trailer.

I've hauled MX bikes in Toyota's (Pre Tacoma days) most of my life. 2 bikes with "quality" tie-downs (not el-cheapos) to the bars with tailgate down and never had any issues. The bikes can lean out a little to clear the bar ends. No biggy.

Ive got three in the back of my Taco before. The two big bikes both 250f's on the far outsides with the tires turned so they dont hit eachother, put a stand in the middle of the front tires and pulled the pit bike in to make it sit back a little further when the front tire was resting on the stand. It was quite cramped but it did work and nothing fell over.

But we put the two big bikes in regularly. Never had a problem at all.
