I'm curious if anyone knows of a higher gear ratio that may be available for the M6 Taco? (Second Gen). Ideally, I would just like a higher ratio in 6th gear. Stock, I can cruise at 80 km/h in 6th (roughly 1600Rpm)... Once I'm up to 120 Km/h, my RPM's are up in the 2500 range, and I'm not exactly being "fuel efficient".

Anyone have any higher ratio gears installed? If so, as much info. as possible would be appreciated, as I'm planning a cross-country drive soon, and the last time I drove my Taco cross-country (while towing my firebird) my fuel efficiency sucked!

    Thanks,
    Fil

So did I, but I guess he's referring to "Manual 6 Speed".

Yes, M6= manual 6 speed. I mostly hear that used with the f-body crowd though.

I think to change your overdrive gearing in the transmission will cost more than you would save on fuel.

Find a used 3rd member from the 2nd gen 4 cylinder 5 lug variants doing gear swaps... Final drive ratio is 3.31 compared to your 3.73... Another option is the X-Runner 3rd member is at a more extreme 3.15 final drive ratio.

I wanna say that even 1st gen third member from the S-Runner or 95.5 - 2000 v6 5spd (5 luggers) will fit, but I'm not 100% sure. They're also 3.15 final drive ratio.

K-Dub, alright!!! Hey, nice Kung-fu kitty avatar by the way. My wife laughs her ass off whenever she see's it.

Oh, and bigger tires are on the way... Just as soon as the stockers wear out.

i dont this he is talking about the gear ratio in that sense. I think he is wanting to swap out the gearing in the actual transmission. from what i got is he wants to keep all the current gear ratios but wants to make his overdrive taller (i think its taller for lower rpms's)

ok so your worried about gas mileage and your going with bigger tires

bigger = heavier = more rotational mass = more engine load = worse gas mileage

Can try to find wheel/tire combo that is taller but lighter. Not easy.

The FJ 6sp manual has a .79 gear rather than .85 - don't know if/what's involved in swapping.

Hey there! I know this is over ten years old, but I'm looking at this too. Just had 4.30s put in my truck. Love it, but want to swap 6th out, as you know questioned. Did you ever get an answer about this? I'm in Edmonton too.

    Take care,

    Barrett
