I am about to buy a new 2011 Tacoma 4x4 access cab.
I've been reading this forum and saw a bunch of posts about frames rusting. I am now a bit worried about it.
    Am I worrying needlessly?
I live in northeast Ohio, you know, a lot of snow, salt, and liquid deicers.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

It's a brand new truck, no need to worry. Just take care of it the best you can, try to wash it off on the warmer winter days (I like those auto car washes with the undercarraige wash) and, if you plan to keep your truck for a long period of time (over 5 years say) then look into the frame treatments. You can also undercoat them yourself if you're looking for a good weekend project.

Maintain the frame like anything else! I've decided that once a year to get underneath the truck with a wirebrush and sandpaper to hit rust spots and than paint over em!

My '99 rusted but took 12 years. Also, I'm sure after all the buybacks and repairs Toyota did, I'm sure they have stepped up their game on the frames (at least I'm hoping).

Try to negotiate having the dealer do the undercoating for free.

I justsigned the papers for mine last night. I had the dealer throw in the rustproofing and undercoating package for free. I told him that I did my research on the 1st gen buyback and have heard about problems with ome 2nd gens. We even talked about the load of truck frames that he just got in to do frame swaps on some tacomas.

When I bought mine it already had rust!!:mad::mad: Before signing the papers I decided that it would be a good idea to look under the truck to see if there was any rust. I should have looked more thoroughly, but I only looked at the back end of the truck, (near the spare tire, the back side of the rear axle) and it looked okay. After bringing it home I went under the truck again and saw that there were several patches of rust on the front facing side of the rear axle and on other hard to see places. The dealership fixed it in the end, but the point is, even if the truck is new, check the undercarriage!!!

A few pics when it was NEW from the dealer:

Undercoating is a scam unless its oil based..

even then your not sure they covered every little nook and cranny of the underside..

Mop and glow linoleum formula, cut it 50/50 with water in a sprayer and coat the underside..

It'll look a satin hazy clear and you'll have nothing to worry about..

Don't get it on anything chrome because it's a pain to wash off..

rinse your underside at least once a month and your solid..

X2 on the oil based undercoating. I live in salt land and there is no ''anti-rust paint'' that will keep you rust free.
