like many others said, go with the rem. 870. or whatever fits your fancy, but i use an 870 express and love it. you can get a good shape used one for around 200 bucks. everybody and their mother owns one so its easy to find parts and chokes for. they are possibly the most reliable pump shotguns out there. oh, and mine is ugly as sin so i dont mind draggin it through the woods.

Here is a thought nobody has mentioned yet. synthetic stocks are great because they are not affected by weather and they dont scratch up or chip nearly as bad. HOWEVER... they do not weigh nearly as much so if you will be shooting 3.5 magnum loads it has the possibility to kick your ass. wood stocks will get ugly but be a little heavier and make the recoil for a heavy load more bearable.

OH, another though. this is for your pump vs semi question. semi auto is more work to keep working. more mantainance. more can go wrong. BUT, they can help reduce recoil a little because the pressure from the shell is what operates the action. pump are simple and durable. but they will not absorb any shock and everything will come into your shoulder. the semi auto's, in general, will shoot faster than pumps. that can be good or bad. you may want that extra second to calm down and recover from the previous shot to make another good shot.

if you are going to be in the water lookin for ducks and geese i would say a wood stock pump would be your best bet. if you are going to be walking around in the fields looking for dove and pheasant, i would go with a synthetic stock semi auto. for turkeys, i would go with the wood and pump just because i prefer pumps

Well there are some thoughts for you. Now go buy an 870;)

Foglights are for fog, not oncoming traffic!
I have been running a Remington 11-87 12ga for everything...sporting clays and trap, pheasants, quail, chukar. Shoots light 2 3/4 loads no problem(this gun has thousands of rounds through it) runs dirty or clean.
Weighs a ton and shoots real soft even with heavy game loads.
Parts are everywhere IF you need repair.
I have a buddy that HAD TO HAVE a Benelli Super Black Eagle....you know, gotta have the baddest shottie there is.
He's never shot a 3 1/2" load in his life, and never will.
The gun consistently chokes on light trap loads.
I would not buy a 3 1/2" gun unless you're real sure you will make use of it.
You pay more for the gun and have you seen the prices for 3.5" ammo?
Winchester SX3 and Browning Gold and Silver Hunter are very nice, too.
Pump guns are very reliable but I'm lazy....let the gun do the work.

gunbroker.com has a host of used 870's for sale. 870 Wingmaster (not an express) is a great pump gun. Benelli Nova's can also handle any shell. I have a Wingmaster trap that has been handed down to me and it cycles smooth as silk, has never jammed or FTF'd.

Gunsamerica.com is a good site for used guns also.

An 870 is the Remington pump version, whereas the 1187 is the semi-auto version. There is no semi auto 870 nor a pump 1187.

remingtons older auto was the 1100. awesome duck gun. cheap used i bet.

my brother has an older 1100. he has some shortie wide open barrel on it. not a hastings barrel..i think a rem barrel. i have to tell him to let me shoot a dove. he is absolutely deadly with the thing. we searched for an extra barrel for my 1100 but never found one.

I got a browning 12 and 20 semi auto, im giving them a try this year. I heard semi auto's are good for bird hunting, you get more shots off than a pump but you get more accurate shots off a pump.

Mossberg 500AB (12 gauge). Mine has been shooting every season for longer than I know. Handed down from my father. He was hunting with it as early as the 60's. It is super smooth, never jams. Easy to install/remove duck plug. I've shot woodcock, grouse, ducks, pheasants, geese, with ease. Plenty of shell options. This is the best feeling broken-in gun I have ever handled.

if you need a machine gun shotgun you might want to practice a bit  on the occasion that you miss your first shot, a second should be all you need. you're not killin zombies here

The nova is an inexpensive way to go, but the super black eagle both by benelli are awesome, as is the xterma II from Berreta. I love and use all of them and they are all bulletproof

Amen to that. God help all these poor young souls who feel the only good shotguns are black plastic whiz bangs.

I flipped my canoe two years ago in a marsh while duck hunting. My extrema spent the night under water and was retrieved the next morning. I hosed it off, oiled etc. and has never worked better. I have used it in snow, mud, sand and never a problem. After a day of shooting 3 1/2 for snow geese you will be glad you chose a semi gas gun. It really helps with the recoil. They are expensive but worth it!

thanks for the help guys! I ended up getting a remington 870. It just says 870 on the side.

Also says it shoots 2 3/4, 3, and 3 with some type of mod.

I went out and shot 3s yesterday at ducks and it was awesome! it feels great. i love it!

good call with the 870. very reliable and can get new barrels and chokes anywhere. a 3" shell is a lot more power than you expect, especially with the proper choke in the gun. enjoy it. i know i love mine

Price wise the Remington 870 Special Field is a pretty good bargain. Will handle most anything you might want to shoot. Have 2 wingmasters (upper scale) and 1 special field (matte barrel) myself.
Now you also mentioned wanting a semi-auto. Remington 1100 or 11-87 can be had new for a bit more. Have an 1100 20 gauge. On to overunder. I have both the Mossberg Silver reserve in 12 ga and 20 gauge set (paid 750 for the set). You can buy the 12 gauge for between 400-500. Great upland gun. Also own a Tri-Star 20 gauge o/u. Both are single selective trigger and price for the Tri-Star was about 450.
Figure out how much you want to spend. Then make a decision about pump, semi-auto, overunder. If you have any friends and can try a gun you might find one that just fits your style and budget. Also, don't be afraid to look at used, just use some caution. You can look online at the different models and find out the issues with any gun. Good luck. Ken
