2005 standard cab 4x4 with 65k on it, im just recently getting some bad vibes in the truck and some pretty noticeable noises when i come to a stop. the vibrations vary when they come and go, no specifc rpm or mph range. it almost feels like a wheel bearing. the noise (in addition to the diesel sound these 5 speeds produce) it sounds like a rattling heatshield, but the problem is i had them removed already. that diesel sound these 5 speeds produce actually has gotten a bit louder recently. im not sure where all to look. heres what im going to investigate this weekend.

    1. check the front wheel bearings, both sides
    2. check for any play in the drive shaft
    3. bang the exhaust(when its cool) to see if i can hear anything rattling
    4. check the tranny fulid to make sure its still to the fill line.

anything else you guys can think i should take a look at?

Yes. check ear brake pads. I had a pad separate from the core once and was rolling around freely in the drum making a similar noise/vib. It may be a long shot, but I'd look at it in addition to the other things you mentioned. Are you feeling the vibes in the steering wheel or in the seat? Also, could you have a warped rotor(s)? Just another thought.

on my way to wokr this morning, i noticed that the vibes steadily become louder as speed increases which is why i'm now thinking wheel bearing. its kind of a steady hum, i do have larger tires on but only a half size and it was makin the noise before i installed them. the vibration is kindof felt throughout the cab of the truck.

as for the noise, i think i found the problem there. i was pounding on my exhaust last night to see if i could get any vibration sounds. thats when i decided to touch my upper heat shield (i guess toyota decided NOT to take it off when i requested them to). i touched the heat shield and it fell off the truck.

That sounds like wheel bearings. Way to stick it out and figure it out yourself! Go Pens!

well, i checked for movement in the front wheelbearings, i didnt see any play. my friend told me another method to try. i held onto the coil spring and rotated the wheel to feel any vibrations in the coil. i did notice some slight vibrations from the drivers side, so i guess its on its way out. 65K seems kinda soon, i got 164k out of the ones on my integra.

as for the rattling sound, i got it narrowed down to a certain situation. if im at a lower rpm, say 2200 or less....if its under a load i can hear it coming from the transmission? maybe? it always happens in that situation though. its a rattling/chirping interesting sound. not sure how the hell to find out what it is besides biting the bullet and goin to the dealer...i really dont want to.

is there valve train adjustments on these motors? i did them a few times on my integra, or are these motors/drivetrains generally just noisy?

i didnt notice the noise until i had my radio off, maybe im making a big deal about nothing haha
