So I'm a new member to tacoma world really like your forum, lot's of great info.

I have a 08 4x4 that has front diff play. The play I am referring to can be felt by moving the inner C/V up and down. The drivers side has 80% more play than the passenger side. This causes a drone/slight vibe from 30-45mph that is reported by a lot of folks. Sound resembles a bad wheel bearing but I believe due to the slop in the diff that the problem lies there. I have read up and it seems that this may be a more common problem than I had first thought. I was wondering if anyone else had encountered this problem and if it is actually the side bearings in the carrier. I am out of warranty so any information on the problem or replacement would be helpful.

    Thanks!

Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
it's also been noted that there is more play in the drivers side CVs than passengers, even on the lot.

Good to know, not sure how much play is acceptable. I would wager to day that mine has nearly a 1/4 inch.

slop in the diff bearing vs the wheel bearing you mean? Its dark, I can't crawl under to get my head wrapped around where you are.

I wanted to be sure it was the wheel bearing and not the housing the exits the diff for the CV. The slop can be seen between the inner cv joint and the diff itself that's why I assume its the diff bearing.

it's an 08..unless you have more than 60,000 miles, why not take it to the shop? if it's broken, it's covered.

OP, just fyi...if you take your vehicle to the dealership for regular service, you can call toyota corporate and they will split any out-of-warranty repair costs 50/50 with you.

I have an 08 as well and it is the drivers side carrier bearing you are hearing. It is pressed into the carrier and you have to take the entire carrier out in order to repair it. I had this same issue right at 61,000 miles and this is what I had to do to repair it. One thing I will say is that you do have a tad more "play/slop" in the drivers side than the passengers side, but it is not much when everything is right. I would also say to check the oil in the front diff, I think the seals had an issue and they allow the oil to leak out then fry the front drivers side bearing as a result. This is what I deducted from how mine presented itself and how much and well I was keeping an eye on everything. The only thing I will add is if you have to swap the carrier (as I did) check the 4x4 diff actuator before you get everything back together and on the ground. We ended up needing to replace that too and did not know until it was off the lift. Needless to say it has remained broken until I have enough time and money to take it all back down again, it sucks too with winter coming. Iguess I could have not lifted the truck, but the lift deal was great! So the actuator can wait :D JOE>

Moose - did you just look up a corprate toyota service number?

sloppyjoe - Sounds like my problem, I take it that you have removed one of there things. Did you buy an entire carier from toyota and put your gears in it? I just changed the gear oil in the carrier, it had quite a bit of flake in it which I imagine is the bearing. It hasn't leaked any oil yet I imagine if it gets any worse it will ruin the grease seal too and start leaking.

I think it's in the owner's manual, but I found it on the forums. But it's all the same number. Just go to Toyota's website and click on the "About The Company" link at the bottom. Then select Contact Us from the displayed list. It's the 800 number for their Customer Experience Center.

That one call saved me $1,100 ($2,200 to replace the front diff). And I had over 90K miles at the time...well out of warranty.

have I been spelling warranty wrong my whole life or is it a toyota tacoma specific spelling "warrenty". Don't think I've seen it spelled right once on this entire forum.

yea.. If you had movement that was bad on the scale of what you're saying, you'd be out of diff lube pretty quick. Its probably just normal cv play. THey have to have some to work.

That is about the amount of play maybe a little less than mine. Looks like a poor design to me that only the bearing on the carrier itself supports the inside CV shaft. So I assume that everyone just drive them till they leak?

That's exactly what I was thinking. The grease seals only seal for a certain range of movement. I will also take a look into my front wheel bearings to see if some of my vibe/drone could be coming from there. Just changed the lube it wasn't leaking but did have quite a bit of metal flake in it, which I assumed was bearing shavings.
