Stop brake squeak

How can I stop the squeaking in my brakes ? I just replaced them and every once in a while (mostly when I brake lightly) I can hear a squeak? Any ideas? Thanks.

did you lube the back of the pads, caliper slides, or any of the other moving contact points?

 

Grease the rotors.

Are they good brakes? Cheapo pads/rotors will squeak no matter what you do.

No I didnt lube anything..must be why lol

 

try some lube between the shims and the pads and between the shims and the caliper piston

 

Mine also squeak when breaking lightly. I am going to try lubing everything.

 

I tried that several times on my old 4Runner with no joy...I'd try the lube...

 

if the shims aren't rivited on, take them off

 

This stuff is NOT a lubricant. You're supposed to put it on the backside of the pads (closest to the piston head). It's a thick & sticky goo that you spray on. It's supposed to take out the 'slack' between the pad & the rotor to prevent squeeking.

 

THIS is a brake lubricant, only thing I use. Don't expect to go finding it at your local auto parts store thought. Can get it online for $20.



Castle Brake Life.

Most superior brake lubricant today. Silicone. Use it for metal to metal contact, use it for rubber to metal contact. Literally use it for everthing on ANY brake (Disc or Drum) system that needs lubrication. Water resistant.

 

I am having the same problem on my 07 Tacoma but my squeak is coming from the rear drums and they were just installed less than 1500 miles ago... It only happens when i brake lightly and about at a full stop. I installed the front brakes myself and used brake grease behind the pads, on the pistons, and all moving part areas (except on pad insides or rotors) and that works great! Just can figure out why the rear drums squeak at almost full stop.

Any Ideas?

 

I don't know your mileage but are you trying to say that you put new rear brake drums on your 07 already?

Typically the type of squeak you're describing is brake dust build up inside the drum and and can usually be eliminated by spraying the brake shoes, hardwardware and springs down with brake cleaner, doing the same on the inside of the drum and wiping the inside with a clean rag. Adjust the brake shoes when done cleaning.

If it is new drums,(and new brake shoes??) something may not have gotten lubed on the backing plate or an anchor point. They might also need a little adjusting. Just have both checked, make sure it's all correctly lubed at shoe contact and pivot points and get a good adjustment on them.

 

New shoes were installed by Firestone and the truck has 67XXX miles on it so i dont think its anywhere near time for new drums. Th drums were put on a lathe and cleaned up. Im hoping my money i spent for Firestone to install these shoes was done correctly. Funny how I installed the front brakes myself and they work perfectly and were done correctly with grease the correct pads and rotating the rotters but some "professional" F***'s up the rears and i look like a a$$ when i pull up to a light with squeaking breaks... i replace my brake pads and still makes noise when i brake slowly , and they are oem brakes,any ideas

 

New rear shoes at 67K and machined the drums is what you had done then? Did you also get new a new hardware kit placed in? (hardware = new springs, hold down clips)

Hmmm....gotta be a missed lube spot(s) or adjustment.

If you had this done not all long ago, take it back. Since it was firestone, maybe try a different shop as well.
