What the Heck is this?

So I cracked open my console to install my iPod adapter and saw this little guy under the right cover just below the air vent. Anybody have any idea what this might go to?

 

The passengar airbag on/off switch. I'm going to guess your truck is a double cab.


The double cabs do not have the switch because you can load the kids in the back seat away from the air bags. The switch is there to turn off the air bag if you have kids in the front seat of a standard or extended cab pickup.

 

passenger airbag shutoff.... you dont have it cause your a double cab right?

 

Yeah, I got me one them. So, does that mean that the double cab doesn't have a shut off for the airbag?

EDIT: DOH! Thanks for the info Shooter. Makes sense. I was kinda hoping for a more interesting result. Well, I'll make sure not to stick the midgets in the front.

 

I am guessing that it is the passenger side airbag cutoff switch rely for an AC or regular cab .... part of the wiring harness.

Exactly. In the double cabs the kids are supposed to go in the back half of the cab (or leave 'em at home).

 

there is a weight sensor on the passenger seat. If weight is detected, but under a certain limit the air bag will shut off - other than this, no shut off

 

Ahh, so the elves will have to ride in the back this year. They will not be happy. hehe.

well if the elves weigh less than 60 pounds they wont activate the automatic switch on for the passanger airbag in double cabs

 

hmmm...so does the airbag automatically deploy, or is it activated by a weight sensor?

 

but be careful...you might experience unintended airbag deployment...

the airbag is always on, unless the sensor in the seat detects < 60 lbs, then it will turn off

Isn't the passenger side airbag system normally off unless it detects enough weight? At least that's when "passenger airbag" lights up on the dash.

 

maybe? if there is no weight on the passenger seat, neither the on or off light is on, so i guess we'll never know

 

Hmmm...so I wonder if I could install a shutoff switch, since the wiring is there. That way my asiandate.com girlfriend can ride shotgun.
