painting fender flares

my black fender flares have been looking pretty dull for quite some time now. i was going to paint them sometime soon and was wondering if i needed to sand, prime and paint or is there another method?
i was going to go with the standard black because thats what im used to seeing on my truck (gold) but anyone else out there changed the color of the fender flares on a gold tacoma?

 

unless you're planning on color matching, look into restoration. There's a youtube video (and it's been discussed here also) showing how a heat gun can make those black plastic flares look like new. It was pretty impressive. the youtube video was on a jeep but I guess it works for your flares also.

do you think this would work on ATV fenders?

 

I don't see why not. I'd test it on the underside first to make sure. Just be careful with heat guns, they can do a lot of damage in a hurry because they get so hot. I'd start kind of far away on lo and take my time. This should work for the black fenders on an ATV but I'd take them off so you don't burn the colored plastic it attaches to.

 

wow i would have never thought of that, if i can get my hands on a gun like that i may try it. i did the magic eraser today and it worked pretty good for $5 but i was still going to rub some mothers back to black on it.
