Need help: Tough Decision

I am starting my new job as a police officer at the end of next week, I have a 91 Toyota Pickup now with 220k miles on it. I want a new vehicle to drive, I love the Tundra but the gas mileage is very bad, I have always wanted a Tacoma Double Cab 4x4 TRD Offroad, but today I saw a FJ Cruiser TRD that I liked. So I don't know what to do, I need advice!!

 

Come on guys that have or have had FJ's let me know what you think of them

Apples and oranges. Do you need a pick-up or an SUV? Also, I'd do some research on the gas mileage of a Tacoma. I went from a Chevy V8 to a Tacoma because I needed something smaller and more maneuverable but the MPG's are the same overall (worse than the Chevy on the highway, better in the city). Just saying if you're doing it solely for the mpg's, you might want to rethink your decision.

 

Good one, I like the interior room of the FJ but the door is kinda tricky to get out of the back. I drove a taco today and I don't know if it was the seat or what but the rear view mirror was in way as i was trying to look out across the windshield. And my head was close to the roof in the back.

 

Thats true I drive an F250 that gets 20 mpg city, but the tundra sucks it down like 16mpg highway

 

I considered the the FJ but... I chose the dbl cab tacoma because its still very cool but If need be I can use it as a work truck. Not that I want to but if I have to I can. It sounds like you will have a solid job, if that was the case for me I would have bought the FJ... Matter of fact I was just looking at one today and was thinking..hmmm kinda wish I would have bought one instead.
Plus I have 2 dogs, so I put a cap on the back and they can go back there.
At present I dont go off roading so I dont know from that point of view.

 

I completely understand and like i said I'm keeping my 91 and i know my dad will let me use his truck, especially if I let him drive the FJ. So i dont know what i want.

 

My dad was able to sit in the back of my double cab comfortably. He's around 6'1" - 6'2". I'm short (just over 5'8") so I don't have the issue with the mirror. I went for a double cab, short bed and I now have a shell for the bed. It's kind of the best of both worlds. I have the pick-up when I need it but have plenty of dry, lockable storage with the cap on. My biggest complaint with the double cab, as far as the interior goes, is the storage compartments in the back seat. I wish they were designed so the seats could fold out of the way so, if you've for a dog, he's sitting on the floor and not the seats.

 

I want an fj but not sure if i would be happy with one.they are kinda ugly stock.look awesome lifted with some mods.go check out fjcruiserforums.com. They are some threads about what they like and dislike about them.alot of guys who had both always regret switching.i guess most of us would like both. I really need a pick up.not sure if I want to lug a trailer around when i Need to.the pick up is so convenient.I'm still going back and fourth about an fj and i have a 2010 taco less than a year old.I'm on my iPad so I cant copy and paste links for you.tomorrow

If it's just you, no fam bam I would do the FJ. I have 3 kids to lug around so a DC works well for me. The big advantage to a taco is having a bed. Sure you may solemnly use it, but when you need it, you have it. Instead of having to call around for a friend or pay for delivery. Hell, I made 60 bucks from CL when a guy got my bedroom set but needed me to deliver only about 20min away

EDIT: Plus the MOLLE carrier(aftermarket) for the rear door is tits! You could have a nice set up for all your police gear/rig

 

I would wait until you pass Field training and probation before you go buying a vehicle. Then I would say FJ since you already have a truck.

I thought of that too but I have about a 36 mile forty min. commute to work everyday and my taco has 220K on her, only thing that worries me

My four-wheeler wont fit in the bed of a dc anyway, so trailer is the only option for that and yes i love the bed, but ill have my 91 pickup setting at home for that i guess.
