Rear differential swap question, "will it work"

I have an 07 5-lug 4 banger and i have done some research on re-gearing and the cheapest route would be to swap 3rd members with another truck if i can find one. The question is can i swap mine with that of an 2000-2004 year truck? ECGS wants to charge me $500 to build me one using used parts! Plus they want mine in return! 4-wheel parts wants$700 to build it there, but if i buy one on egay its only like $300-$400 and less money for an 00-04 rear differential.

Will the old style fit/ work?

Why do you ask that im so cheap?

I'm fairly sure the track was narrower on the previous generation truck.

If it doesn't have a diff locker, than yes it can be swapped... at least thats what I got from that site. If you pull your 3rd, buy a gear set, and bring the 3rd member in to a shop, it shouldnt cost more than $400 total.

Why do you want to regear?

 

I would like 4.10 but they are only made by the factory for some reason not even east coast gear supply had any 4.10 they wanted to sell me a used gear set! If i could find a used 3rd member with it already in it that would be ideal. However if it's a lot of trouble ill. Just get it in 4.56

 

4.56's will probably be overkill unless you're going to be running 35" tires. If you're going for 4.10's then it's most likely going to be a used set that someone took out of a truck, unless you order the gears from Toyota. The differentials that will work with your truck are non-elockers that have the new style bearing cap. The bearing cap is shown in the picture below. It's what the bolts are being removed from in the picture.

When I re-gear, I will be going with 4.56:1 gears. Right now I am running 31's, but will be switching to 33's and the 3.33:1 gears are hurting a lot, I gotta drop two gears to accelerate on highway.

 

What size tires are you going to run? If you are auto, you should get 4.56 if you can find them, but 4.10's are most prevalent. 96-04 non e locker axle 3rd members should fit.

 

I'm currently running 30" tires and may upgrade to 33" in the future after these get bald. I think my ratio currently is 3.58 and its so sluggish to accelerate and it feels really loaded down at 60 mph and 65 mph only turning 2k RPMs at 65 mph. At 55 it turns a little over 1500 RPMs and it's good for fuel milage im sure but I rarely get to go that fast. 4.10 seems to be the magic ratio but finding a used 3rd is hard but then again im only looking on egay and craigslist... Maybe i need to search a few local junk yards?
