I hate scum who don't return a lost wallet

I lost my wallet at an auto pick a part yard this morning and am pissed at myself for losing it and pissed at the scum who picked it up and didn't return it.

I went to Pick a Part in upstate NY to grab a bumper for my step son's 95 Tacoma. We paid to get in the yard and went straight to the truck, removed the old bumper in about 20 minutes and then went back to the office to pay. I reached for my wallet and it was gone. I immediately retraced my steps back to the truck and spent 1 hour looking all around. Nothing!

All I can figure is some douche picked it up and pocketed it! Effing asshole! I had $240 in cash and my 2 credit cards, license, insurance card, etc in the wallet. If this asshole is so hard up then take the cash and leave the wallet. He can't use the credit cards so why take the whole thing.

God I'm pissed right now!

Sorry to hear about your situation but I think you may have a wrong perspective. Most people I know would not return wallet because frankly what kind of "meeting" do you think would take place if that someone indeed wanted to return it out of goodness of the heart?! It is not like you would say "heeey kep a ton of cash just give me my wallet back" and likewise it is not like they are going to say "what if he wants me to keep the cash and be a good person and return it. What if I return it but keep the cash and they have me on camera? What if I show up there and he jumps me?" That is why most people would probably keep the cash and destroy the evidence unless they knew you personally.

I had a similar situation happen to me. When I broke my knee skiing ... there I was under the lift trying to come back to my senses. While shuffling around in and out of my daze I found someone's multitool in a leather case and someone's clip wallet thingie. I put both into my pocket with intent to return it at the lost and found. I dont know what happened afterwards but I remember climbing into the back of a snowmobile then seeing someone cut into my pants and my knee the size of a basketball then a day later I was on the way back home in the passenger seat in and out of consciousness. So a week passes while waiting for the surgery and my mom was doing laundry and found a clip and a multitool in my pockets. So we locate the person on white pages. Call them up, mail the thing back with 800 some dollars, credit cards and a driver's license. Best we got was a thank you on the phone.. not even a "heeey guys thank you for finding it.. I know shipping might cost 5.95 so you are welcomed to use some of that money that you are sending back to me". Yes we did a good deed but at the end of the day we felt empty because money was tight back then and we very much could have used that sum to pay off some medical bills that we got from emergency room.

Now many years later I know that if I am ever in same situation again I might make a different choice if you know what I mean.


As a side note stop by your local grocery stores, convenience stores, stores in general and put up fliers saying that you want your wallet back etc etc etc and to deposit it at some sort of neutral location where people feel safe and that you will offer a reward. Email might work too.

 

Yarik83 I am stunned by your lack of morals. I have found wallets on 3 occasions and returned them to lost and found where I found them. I to didn't have much money but felt it was the right thing to do. I didn't worry about a reward. It is the right thing to do and the only thing to do. Just because someone didn't give you a reward you are now willing to compromise your values? WTF? Your reply speaks to a lack of character. Your karma is dark and just remember what comes around goes around. I;m at freaking pick a part and could use the money I lost but some scum found it and pocketed it. I would rather pay it forward, you obviously would rather fuck someone over

On the contrary sir. For reasons unbeknown to me for all the volunteering that I do, charitable donations that are taken out of my paycheck, community outreach, teaching in high school (occasionally).. it seems that for every good deed that I try do do... it seems not good enough to recipients.

I am truly sorry for your loss man but I am just trying to show you all the reasons why someone would not want to get in touch with you (and not you specifically but people that lost stuff in the first place). For all they know... you can file a lawsuit against them for stealing cash you did not have. Weird things happen. Finders laws vary state to state but generally finders are less protected than those who lost items in the first place. They might return entire thing and then be jailed for "taking a 1000 dollars" or something.

Meanwhile call up a local police precinct and report your loss. Maybe someone has already returned it. Meanwhile keep your chin up and regardless of how pissed off you are try not to lose your way and go apesh*t on people.

 

You VOLUNTEER for free to help people not to expect people to be nicer to you and give you crap.

You do good deeds not to expect something, but because its the right thing to do.



I volunteer on a fire department, I pull people from cars, houses, whatever it be.

Do I expect something? Nope, not even a thank you.

I do it because I want to, because it's the right thing to do, because in their time of need I can be there to help!

 

Don't worry when I was 15 I lost a wallet. I had about 100 bucks and the person who found the wallet only took 70% of the cash. Haha

 

I lost/dropped my wallet in a bar one Friday (payday) night. It was found the next day in the parking lot behind the bar. The cash was gone, but everything else was in it, including that little laminated card with my picture, name and address on it. Fuckers.

Edit- I forgot this part. I was pretty much living paycheck to paycheck. I had just lost my whole check less what I had drank that night. For the first and only time in my life, I pawned something. My S&W .357(586). As soon as I could get together enough cash to get it out, I did. It was only in pawn for 2-3 weeks. Before the pawn ticket even came due, someone broke in my house and stole it. If I'd have left it at the pawn shop, I'd probably still have it today. Fuckers.​

Sorry to hear that you lost your wallet, maybe it will turn up somehow, you never know right?
I have found several wallets & cellphones since I travelled a lot for work & always return them whether its drop it at the police station, contact the person directly, put it in the mailbox.
It was how I was raised & never expected anything in return or worried about a lawsuit

Sucks for the OP, being an LP manager I come across this situation daily. It's tough but be sure you took the proper steps to prevent ID theft.

And Yarik, people in need have different situations that may cause them not to say thank you. Dealing with different classes of people daily, you realize alot of people were brought up not to say please and thank you, it's all on how you were raised and what morals you have.
Like Coloradomx said, don't do good deeds expecting something back...that's not how it works.

 

A long time ago I took a girl sailing on a small lake outside of Omaha. I changed tack, told her to duck, and she didn't. The Sunfish capsized and I see my shorts and her t-shirt floating. I tell her to grab the clothes, and she grabs the t-shirt, letting my shorts sink, with wallet and keys.
A year later, I'm working on a project in Durango Colorado, and a package arrived in the mail. My wallet and keys, still wet, but completely intact with credit cards and cash. A little girl hooked 'em while fishing, went through the trouble of tracking me down out of state (LONG before the internet) and shipped them at her cost.

I sent her all $45 in cash (stained blue from the year-long submersion in my black wallet) for her honesty.

 

That's where you're very wrong, sadly. Keep a close eye on your CC activity, and report it right away to your CC company so they can cancel the cards and get new numbers for you.


And to yarik83, I understand the point you were trying to make. I doubt you would actually keep the wallet, you did the right thing the first time, and you probably would do it again. You are just pointing out why some people would keep it, as wrong as that would be.

Back in my college days when I worked for Delta Airlines, we used to find all sorts of things on the airplanes. I once found a wallet with $500 in it. I sure could use $500, but it just wasn't the right thing to do. I turned it in and never heard another word about it. One of my coworkers found a Boston Celtics NBA championship ring and return it as well.

I have always believed that you shouldn't keep stuff that you find without first making a reasonable attempt to return it to it's rightful owner.
