OH CRAP! 84k Check engine light came on.

Have not had it checked yet but anyone have a check engine light come on around 80k. Never had any problems with truck. Any ideas?

run over to your local auto parts store and get their code checker and post back what the cel code is.

 

Auto zone does the code read for free, after you ask them to print it out, come back and let us know what code it is

x2 on what janster said. O2 sensors like to fail around that time frame. Or possibly had you just fueled up? Sometimes the gas cap isn't on all the way and can throw a code or the seal on the cap can get worn.

 

I run a service dept at a dealership so my master tech is gonna pull it in this afternoon and check it. Hopefully a cheap and easy fix.

 

If you have already checked your gas cap then my next guess is O2 sensor.

Could be the sensor still. Bad sensor will false-positive a bad cat.

I'd replace the sensor first, if it still throws a code get the cat done.

Nope, sound logic to me. Replace the rear O2 sensor and see if the error comes back or not.

 

Yeah, if it turns out the sensor was ok and the cat's still bad, then you're out the $70ish + labor for the sensor, but it's either that or replace the cat and find out the sensor's bad, or replace the cat and the sensor and cover all your bases. You can get lucky and replace only the cat and only the cat's bad, but it's a gamble. An expensive one if you're wrong.

Personally I'd start with the sensor and go from there.

Whatever you do, make sure you have them give you whatever parts they take off the truck. That way if you've replaced the wrong part, at least you have an extra for when that part eventually does fail.

Even bad cats can be sold for a surprising penny because of the precious metals inside.

Check for exhaust leaks too. Could give an improper reading. I believe someone recently removed their oem manifold and found a hairline crack. Either way, its still more work than a simple o2 sensor, so I too would probably still start there

 

Crawl under and visibly check and tapping your cats for holes or rattle. Also check electrical connections there.
