Got my taco 2 months ago- want to trade in

So I got my 2007 Tacoma SR5 4x2 V4 35,000 miles 2 months ago. Love the truck, but it's only a 4 banger, and not even 4WD. I rushed into buying it because I really needed a truck and wanted a Taco pretty bad.
Now I'm thinking of trading it in for a TRD because I want something with a little more balls.
Anyone think this is a bad idea right now? I drive A LOT, probably 50 miles a day. I'm not looking to off road every weekend but I want the capability.
Anyone here once have a 4 banger and decide to bump up to the big dog?

 

I've never owned a 4 banger...always went with 4wd 6cyl in the Toyota trucks I've owned. I can't blame you for wanting something with more balls but you'd be better off waiting until the price of gas comes down.

Hmm good point on the gas. What's the average MPG for a stock TRD OR usually at? Right now I'm getting about 19 on my 4cyl.

 

According to Fuelly, I'm averaging about 19MPG. A good bit of that is in rush hour traffic and hauling ass to and from school, and I have 32" tires (this is running regular).

Keeping the RPM under 2K and running Premium gets me great MPG, but I can't afford anything other than regular right now.

 

its all about how you drive. i was getting 17 on half a tank city the other half highway. . . then this weekend i covered some serious highway miles and was excited to check my mileage. i think i got like 320 something miles out of the tank. . fill up, do the math!! . . . . . . . only 18 FML!!! . . .

I agree. Everyone loves newer and more powerful, but $5 per gallon- I'm just sayin'.
Plus, remember those 1980's Toyota commercials where the owner would jump in the air rejoicing his truck that just past 500,000 miles- those were all 4 bangers!

 

If you are serious about trading however, the price of gas may work to your advantage. If you can live with the mileage of a 4.0, which many of us do, throw the line out to your dealer about wanting a new truck but having reservations.....It's unfortunate but sometimes games have to be played to get the best price.

 

Do the math on the difference in mpg. Your expected use of the truck, the mpg of the 4 banger and the 6, and gas prices at whatever level you want. Unless you're driving 50K miles a year, you'll find the difference in $ isn't much. I laugh at all the people that take it in the shorts by trading their "gas guzzlers" for something that they don't want to drive, simply because it gets better mileage. They end up throwing away more money on the trade than they will ever save at the pump, and end up hating their vehicle.

I drove a '93 Toyota P/U with a 4 banger for 15 years, and now have a 6. Loved 'em both, but definitely like the 6 better.

 

Keep the 4 banger. Not worth the crappy gas mileage right now.

Owned a 2000 4wd 4 banger that Toyota bought back off of me. Had 175,000 miles on it. Bought a v6 4dr 4wd and have to say i'm in love. Love the power it has, and get just about the same gas mileage that i did with my 4 banger. I race quads and always hauling trailers and what not and a 4 banger wasn't cutting it turning my tires and hauling all of that load.

Absolutely loving my new (08) model so i don't think you will be disappointed at ALLLLLL.

you might be able to get a better deal on a V6 with gas prices higher. I am sure you can find someone out there who is looking to downsize due to high gas prices, and you might be able to work a deal with them.

you can beef up 4 bangers. iv had mine for almost 6 months and i love having a truck that can get over 20mpg highway. if you want to make it have the beefed up look just get a lift and some bigger tires, it wont change your mpg drastically (depending on size). But IMO 4 bangers get the job done and save you some $.

 

I, like you owned a I4 SR5 2006 Tacoma. It was great, but ya, I couldn't stand not being able to go camping in the woods if the road got rough, or if it was too muddy, etc.

Don't have info yet as far as milage difference etc, but just in how I feel driving around with a bit more height and extra power is nice.

The real difference will come in the spring when the roads start to be clear enough to go camping. (Around start of june).

I'm certainly glad I did it and don't regret it at all. I'm just learning to drive stick again so my milage is only about 15mpg according to the calibrated scangauge, but I'm sure that will improve as I do.

 

just got 21.81 coming back from vacation on the highway.. Thats was through hilly TN, KY at 75mph cruise control most of the way.. Drove right at 120 miles at exactly 5.5 gallons of gas.
