We have some serious hills in WV, I drive in 4 or even 3 in town, always D on the open road, but I have been driving manuals for 35 plus years. I do like an auto in a 4wd truck but find it hard to give up control of the gear ratio.

In town with a manual I put it in 5th at 30-35mph and 6th at 35-40mph, depending on terrain. The truck is just coasting down the road like yours will do for you automatically. You should always be in D in my opinion. Why stop the truck from shifting to the optimal rpm, saving you gas. I fill my tank every other day, so I really pay attention to this and have noticed a difference in gas mileage. Gone from 16.5mpg shifting up to 4th to 17.7-18.2mpg by using 5th and 6th. Your auto will always get better gas mileage than my manual so let it do its job and shift when it wants, put it in D.

Lets just hope then it enlightened some. Because I didn't know the lower selected speeds were there for that reason just a few years ago. Thought it was for very hilly terrain where you wanted to keep the torque. :p

I leave it in 4th around town. My engine does bog, even had some engine ping during hard acceleration. Engine performance is unresponsive in "D" at these lower speeds as OP Jim mentioned. I think Toyota geared transmission towards fuel economy rather than performance.

Well doesn't lower gearing, mean less revs? Lower gearing for in town would be easier and in theory should give better gas mileage?? especially for stop and go traffic you don't even need the gas.

D unless I'm going up a hill and can keep the revs down by being in a lower gear.

    D all the time.

Shift to 4 if towing uphill.

Shift to 4 if getting on the expressway with lots of traffic & need that quick burst of speed to squeeze in.

Please read that again for me.

I drive in D unless I'm slowing my speed with gears on back roads and lousy traffic of metro living. This is entirely downhill driving for speed control instead of wearing my brakes. I do constantly jump into 4 for the passing lane downshift and instant power instead of having to mash the gas and get the vacuum signal to work for me and go all Quadra-Jet on my mileage.

There's has to be a mileage penalty from pumping throttle at low rev's when the engine is torque-less and the resulting shifts, especially since my area is quite hilly.

If it was long, slow and flat so it never shifted or needed throttle pumping to accelerate in traffic I suppose D would be better for mileage though. So as with most of life's big questions: it depends. There are no easy, one size fits all answers.
