The 'I'm running out of room to bolt things on' build

Awsome build! How are you liking the skinny 34's. Was curious if you were geared or not, and if not how is the driving with the skinnys?

 

I need to regear haha. Bad. I'm right between gears at cruising speeds of 45 and 65. Constantly shifting. The truck is pretty sluggish. Could have something to do with the extra 2000 pounds on it.

 

Haha, okay thats good to know. I was thinking on making the bump to this size with the stock gearing, thinking that the tire being skinny would help with the gearing and the fitment. Guess its going to be a skinny 33 then.

 

Well, to be fair, my truck weighs 6000 pounds with no gear in it. I think the weight may play a considerable amount into that.

 

6000 eh, I'll have to check what mine weighs and go from there. I think last time I checked I was over 5000, but I didn't have a bumper or my tranny or t-case skid on, plus im putting a high clearance on soon too. Lol see how she goes. Thanks for all the info, much appreciated.

 

That and the taller the tires the lower the rpm you run at at specific speeds so you now make less power there as well.

ie you now make less power at 75mph because you are running at a lower rpm so it is harder to hold speed without downshifting to get the rpm back up and make some more power.

Stock I ran about 2250rpm at 75 mph. With 33's I ran about 1900 rpm and now with 4.88's and 33's I run about 2700 rpm.

The 1gr makes ok power at 2250, but really poor power at 1900, and makes great power at 2700 rpm. At least in terms of maintaining a speed.

 

Good to know. I didn't think the one inch increase in circumference (over a 33) would be that much of an increase. Also, with the decrease in width, I thought that would decrease the rotational mass, thus making it a bit better for power, apposed to a 315 for instance. Looks like a 255 and see how she goes from there I guess. haha. Thanks for the info

 

I'm running 255/85R16's. I like the skinny better. Less rubbing problems and they tuck into the fenders up front so I didn't have to trim my fenders to clear them at full stuff. Just took a little off hear and there and beat the firewall back some.

 

That's exactly one of the reasons I wanted to run a skinnier tire in the first place, as well as the added benefit of traction. I have read a bunch of stuff regarding the 255, but there isn't a whole lot around here regarding skinny tires. Went lurking through the 35's thread and they are all running wide tires, which I think is one of the reasons for half of the clearing issues. Then again, I have no personal experience so I cant for sure say

 

I'm running 3/4" spacers and stock 17" wheels and have no rubbing at all. I chose tall/skinny for te traction as well and have not been disappointed. It was the tallest skinnest tire I could find that wasn't a 37". I may see what i can fit under her though next time around.
