My $1,500.00 Taco 06 TRD 4x4

I was looking over some of the great and creative trucks that gave me some great inspiration. I usually don't get into this sort of thing but I thought I would show you my $1,500 Taco. Yes $1,500. I have hobbied with Toyota for nearly 20 years this has been the biggest and best one yet.

I purchased this for $1,500 (Basically for a few parts for diffrent truck). Once I got it home and after about 20 minutes of fiddling I had it running like a top. 36k 4x4, AC, and mechanical intact. I decieded to my wifes dissmay to rebuild this in my garage. The plan was to find a good donor truck use parts and sell what was left and with any luck a free truck at the end.

Here we go....

Bringing it home..

The story was the Truck was bought new in 06 from a local dealship. After a period of time the insurance lapsed and the truck was rolled. With no insurance the owner paid on the Truck for 4 year to get the title while it sat just like this....

The rebuild

I carefully watched salvage auctions for a few weeks to make sure I knew what I was getting into. Found and bought a very nice donor truck 800 miles away...
This is the donor truck behind the Penske and the other picture... you can see where it got hit it in the rear Drivers side leaf spring. 06 Prerunner with 83k miles.

Good luck with the project, Jeff. It Looks like a lot of work, even if there is no frame damage.

... and thanks for the bump stops!

The rebuild

The first order was to take off all the sheet metal and find out what I really have. I did this my garage with a cherry picker and the occasional help of my unimpressed 16 year old...

Once stripped down to the frame. I had a bent driver side knuckle but not bad other than that. Took it to frame shop to double check everything. Got to start with a good foundation.

Good luck, fun project but very time consuming. But will all be worth it when it's done!

You mean the owner lived? Hopefully he didn't have a passenger. Bad ju ju to fix something up that someone died in.

The rebuild of Donor

I then started to disassemble the Donor truck which was 06 TRD Prerunner. Which worked out very well except for one small (ok a little bigger than small) glitch. The wiring harness in the Dash...

I found out that I knew more about Tacoma's wiring harness than the local parts dept at the dealership... (really guys) the wiring harness on Prerunner is diffrent behind the dash than the 4x4. I had to change out the whole harness.
