Alright ordered my rear off of ebay about a week ago.
I know alot of people have mixed reviews and opinions on this swap but I will try and do my best to document the process to help others out.

Its a 8.8 Ford rear from a 1998 Explorer. It has 3.73 gears, limited slip diff, and disk brakes.
I am actually picking it up today and will be wiping it down with solvent to clean it up before spraying a light coat of primer on it. Ill post pics after I do that. But here is a pic from ebay to hold everyone off.

Why are you going to try and mate a Chevy tranny mate to it? An r154 will bolt up amd give you a 5 speed..

Should be a cool build though

do yourself a favor and stay away from FR500 reps. A good friend of mine went through 3 sets of them, all were either out of round or some other defect that caused drivability issues.

Other than that it sounds like a cool project, however I too am curious why you are going with GM auto over something of the 5 or 6MT variety

Glad to see some interest! I'll try not to disappoint.

Hey what brand was the FR500 replicas? This could have a lot to do with the quality of manufacturing.

I'll see if I can explain my reasoning....
I feel like a lot of people go wrong when they set unrealistic goals for their build. So I set a goal of 500hp and want to be as fast as possible with it.
It will get its most racing done from 50-120 style racing.
So I decided ford 8.8 explorer because they are dirt cheap and easily rebuildable.
If you know about drag racing..especially on the streets, an automatic is the best way to go, esp with a turbo. With that thought in mind Chevy autos are a dime a dozen and every transmission shop has rebuilt a ton of them. Not to mention the supra guys have been mating them to 2jz motors for a while now.
