My MGM build

Hey everyone, I posted in the new member forum several weeks back, but got my first tacoma about a month ago and have been obsessed with getting my dream Tacoma for over a decade, so it's been quite gratifying FINALLY getting one and making it into the truck I've always wanted. I got a MGM 2013 TRD Off Road with Entune radio, and though I'd give an update on how it's come along since February. Here is what I've done so far:

-Pro comp stage 1 6" lift, got shop to add 1/2" bigger blocks on back than what came with kit to level it out since front was considerably higher when I first got it back
-35" Toyo Open Country MT's
-20" black XD Rockstar Wheels
-Hypertech speedometer calibrator
-Dark graphite Katzkin leather seats; front, rear and center console..had a leather shop here do the install
-GrillCraft front 2 piece grille and added a custom TRD emblem
-Viper 5704 remote start alarm system with smartphone interface
-BenWa's sliding rear window kit
-Pop&Lock power tailgate lock-hopefully will keep my tailgate from disappearing. installed myself, super easy and cheap protection, highly recommend
-Tinted front windows, I think it's 20%
-Stubby antenna..HORRIBLE antenna reception but looks great..that's what satellite radio and spotify is for
-Nfab step bars
-Tacoma all weather floor mats
-CSJumper's LED map lights, and a 32 LED dome light from superbrightleds.com

The only other plans I have right now are to figure out what to do about the back chrome bumper..ideally I'd like to grab a trd sport mgm bumper and a hood with scoop, but from what I can tell that's like chasing unicorns around here..so I may end up ordering one through toyota later this year, gotta have something truck-wise to dream about right? Plus I think I've spent about all I can in a one month period on a truck and still stay married..so I better lay low for a while anyway.

I'm in Austin, and the stock gears aren't too bad with 35's..I am going to regear to 4.56 this fall, but for now it's completely tolerable. I had my first real road trip this weekend in it, and it was running about 2100 rpm at 75mph, 1600-1800 rpm at 68-70mph. Hills were the only time you could notice it struggling a bit.

As far as coilovers go..what is the actual advantage to them vs the stock suspension..more travel?

The most important thing is to get rid of that HUGE spacer in the front. And with that spacer you have a lot less travel than if you had coilovers. That spacer will wear on your other suspension components a lot faster than if you had coilovers. Then the other one is that it will handle off road 1000 times better with coilovers

and if you dont have your sway bar off, I would highly recomend you try taking it off. I was extremely hesitant to take mine off, cuz i do 90-95% on road driving so i waited 2+ years. Once i took it off i realized how much nicer it was. I wish i would have taken it off the day i got my lift on. I bet if you take it off you wont put it back on.

Interesting..yea mine is mainly going to be street driving, but will look into coil overs more if nothing else, to reduce wear on the suspension. And what benefit did you see from removing the sway bar? You now have me curious

It really helped me with potholes and ditches. I thought I would really feel a bunch of roll on the turns but the bigger tires really absorb any roll. It allows your suspension to act independent of each other. You really should spend the time to take it off. It only takes 10-20 min to take it off. I bet you won't put it back on

Thanks everyone! Trust me it pains me to look at that chrome bumper every time I get in my truck.. I think I'm going to go aftermarket bumpers front and back this fall so I'm just dealing with it for now. Also going to try and find a scooped hood either through trade or buying online, we'll see if I have any luck with that.
