From the start, its been all about improving performance and keeping it dependable. I'll try and detail any learning points I hit along the way. Hopefully this helps someone with their Taco improvements!

    As she sits today:
Over 307TQ, 274HP (this was before y-pipe and intake)

    First a quick Tacoma memorial:
My FIRST Tacoma was an '07 Access 4x4 4banger. It was a great truck, and that little 4cyl was plenty powerful for just about anything I could throw at it. I miss those 4.10 gears!

Unfortunately, after a 3 day straight military exercise, the lack of sleep got the better of me and I decided to nap my way into a telephone pole. Needless to say, the truck was totaled. Amazingly, I walked away with only minor injuries. Can't say the same for the telephone pole! Truly a great truck to the bitter end.

Ok, back to my 06! First off, hers how she looked when I picked her up. Pretty similar to how she looks today, until you get under the hood! Picked her up for $14,400 in July '12. Access cab with 4.0L, 6spd, 80k miles, and in pretty good shape; seemed like a deal to me!

Mod #1, AUG12: URD Throwout bearing
Unfortunately, shortly after purchase I heard the dreaded squeal of a failing throwout bearing. The solution was the URD throwout bearing kit. I did the install myself, which was a process. I put some lessons learned with the photos below:

First off, removing the transmission isn't too bad. A lift and transmission jack are a must. The upper bolts for the bell-housing can be a bitch though. I was able to get to them fairly easy by supporting the transmission, removing the transmission mount, and then lowering the rear of the transmission slightly. Then you can grab a few extensions for your ratchet and go along the top of the transmission to get to them. Same process works well for re installation and torquing them when you finish up.

    Transmission removed

This is the shaft after removal; you can see the uneven wear due to the original bearing

This is a shot of the splines. I'm no clutcholigist, but it looked like normal wear to me so I didn't replace anything else in there. Its still holding up fine today, so no worries there!

Heres a shot of the old and new bearings during installation. Notice the larger inner diameter for the new bearing to accommodate the new steel sheath for the shaft

Mod #2, late '12: Stock intake reversion

I didn't like the K&N Intake because I didn't feel like it was an improvement on the stock intake. Maybe this was flawed thinking, but the stock is a cold air intake. The K&N was not. Yes, it had a box, but it didn't seal anywhere so I'm sure it was sucking up plenty of hot air from the engine bay. That and I'm just not a big fan of K&N products; they seem to cut plenty of corners for some small top end gains. Craigslist'd the K&N, and got a stock intake for cheap.

    Mod #3: Synthetic fluids

For the fluids, I went synthetic from the engine back with quality synthetics. It was very straight forward. Only regret there was the rear diff fluid was tricky to find a good mix for. I've tried a few and I'm not sure if these things are just finicky, but it just doesn't quite behave as well as it did on stock fluids. If I could do it again, I'd just bite the bullet and go with fresh stock fluids for the rear diff. Unfortunately the dealer charges a ridiculous amount for it (to the tune of about $120 for a fluid swap if I remember correctly). For the transmission I used Redline MT90. Zero regrets there; shifts and runs great.

Mod #4: URD Short throw shifter

For the shifter, this was a must. I had one on my 4cyl 5sp, and missed that positive feel. Install was a breeze(URD writes up some great instructions), just be prepared to have your cab smell like transmission fluid for a few days. And don't get RTV on your seats like me lol

To top it off, I added a TRD shift knob too

    Mod#5: New stock oil pan

Bent the oil pan screwing around and didn't want to risk it interfering with oil-uptake. So I got a new one from the dealer ($40ish), and threw it on there. No regrets there; oil is kind of important

A (blurry) shot with the pan off

    Mod #6: TRD Supercharger

Starting around November, I got the urge to start pushing the power on this thing. First off of course was a TRD SC. I debated for a while on whether to do this one or the URD. I settled on the TRD for 3 reasons: I liked the early boost from the TRD, I didn't have the time to install it myself, and I had a warranty with TRD. Total cost was $5k out the door; 4 for the SC and fit kit, and $1k for labor. I'm sure plenty of folks have had it done cheaper, but I didn't have a lot of options living on Oahu.

I've had it on for a few months now. Overall impression is that it is pretty damn expensive when you look at what you get.. but damn does it make the truck more fun to drive. Gas mileage has not changed at all (still seeing ~18 on mixed driving). Overall I'm glad I finally bit the bullet and gave it a shot!

Fresh from the dealer! Looovveee that whine

And of course, I had to see what she was putting to the wheels, so I took her to the local dyno. Numbers looked good to me; this is still with stock intake and stock exhaust too! 300TQ, 263HP

    Mod #7: URD U-Spec headers

After the S/C, instead of feeling satiated, I just wanted more power. Since URD had just put out their new U-spec headers, I decided thats where I'd find it. Install is pretty straight forward if you follow the instructions. Re-torquing the manifold nuts is a pain though; be prepared to try many ratchet/socket/extension combinations to make it in there. Also, my starter wires were contacting the headers after install. A cable tie fixed the issue.

One issue that has popped up since install with these is there is an exhaust leak on the left side. I was pretty sure I'd hit every bolt, but I'm beginning to think it might be the gaskets. I got a set of new stock gaskets (the metal type) and used them for the install, but the contour of the stock and URD headers are different where they mate up to the block. The URD ones are a flat, uniform surface, while the stock are slightly recessed or raised (forget which) around the openings to the primaries. I'm debating replacing the stock gaskets with some of the crushable metal type ones to see if that fixes the exhaust leak. Its just such a pain to get in there and pull them off!

This is the steering linkage URD mentions in their instructions; its pretty simple to detach and reattach during installation

And of course I had to take it back to the dyno after install; Nice gains throughout the powerband!
    Headersbeforeafter_905b86601da97ab6937dda34e5b92ec2a1c80d0c.jpg

I also had the chance to lend my truck to a professional driver who utilized a closed course to make this video. Unfortunately he had hold my iphone while driving and it made take-off a little tricky. Luckily I, er he, kept it steady-ish!

    Mod #8: URD Y-pipe

Next up I ordered up a new y-pipe to follow up the headers. Great quality, easy install, and definitely less restrictive than the stock y-pipe. Especially since now there are zero cats! Sorry mother nature; I'll plant a tree or something

Rusty stock y-pipe taking up valuable space; unsat! The stock cats were in decent shape; a little bit of clogging on the passenger side. Couldn't see the down the drivers side ones to get a good look.

    Mod #8: Innovate guages

My latest mod has been a set of innovate gauges from URD. I also got the flexpod to mount them up nice and snug. The exact types were 'Innovate MTX-L Air/Fuel Ratio Gauge' and 'Innovate 3851 MTX-U Vacuum/Boost & Shift Light, Gauge Kit'. Installation was, again, pretty straight forward. Flexpod is solid and fits the gauges very well. Very expensive for what it is IMHO, but still it does the job very well. Still haven't hooked up my AFR sensor; I was waiting on the y-pipe to finish up so I could get the reading from the merge.

My only issues with the gauges so far has been the boost gauge. I'll break it down into pros and cons:
    Pros:
    Very responsive reading
    Great appearance and quality
    Simple to wire up
    Cons:
Has trouble picking up low positive pressure (anything from 0.0 PSI to ~1.4 PSI is either skipped or very erratic)
    Expensive

After install, I was surprised to see my boost peaking only around 4.5 PSI when many other have said they see 6 or so with stock. Not sure why this is, but the HP/TQ numbers were looking fine so I suppose its just my peak boost. Normal pressure for idle hovers around -24 PSI

    Before gauges

    After gauges!

I rigged up all my power and ground from the fuse box using add-a-circuits. I'd definitely recommend this instead of splicing this or that. It was very straight forward. Nothin is hooked up yet in this pic, but the wires from the gauges are routed in from the top
    9873DA22-38AA-4B89-84C7-8C30E3C6CDE7_170faee1ac4a3db57e1d57ae8db618fd6f719037.jpg

This is one of the add-a-circuits I used. Orielly's is where I got mine; I'm sure other stores have similar products

Here is the boost sensor under the hood. I just ziptied mine in there; so far it has been solid. I ran the cable across the upper firewall (you can kind of see it in the picture) to the drivers side boot down under the brake fluid reservoir.

Here is a shot from the software that comes with the Innovate gauges. This is boost (in PSI) over time for 2 gears at WOT

Mod #9: AFE Stage II Si Intake

This one was a no-brainer. Simple install, great results. I could definitely feel the mid-high pull harder after adding this. Can't wait to get back to the dyno and see what kind of numbers its putting down now!

Looks a heck of a lot better than the stock; now you can see all the TRD logos on the S/C!

And that brings me pretty much up to date. Mods to come (already in hand, just waiting to install!). Unfortunately, my truck is currently on a boat being shipped from HI to ATL.
    URD 2.8" Pulley
    URD Fuel pump upgrade
    AFR gauge completion
    More dyno!

And when I get the money:
URD mk2 3" cat-back to finish out the exhaust

    31JAN13 - AFR Gauge completion:
Finally got around to finishing out my wideband setup today. Here are a few shots of how I routed the cables:

Shot of the bung. I put it right after the junction in the y-pipe.

I routed the cable up under the heat shields against the frame, and then up along the transmission to where the shifter comes into the cab

Heres where it comes up in the cab. I used a drill to cut about a 3/8" slot to slide the cable into, and then finished up with a grommet so the cable didn't get cut into by the vibrations. The rest of the routing was up through the console over to the connectors by the fuse box.

31JAN14 - Transmission rear main seal replacement

I noticed the leak at the rear of the tranmission was getting worse. It was starting to drip, and it was getting on my precious URD y-pipe. That had to stop. A new one from the dealer was only about $16, so I had no excuse not to. Here is it just prior to the swap

    31JAN14 - URD Mk2 Cat-Back

I've been pining over this puppy for a while. I had an exhaust shop in HI throw together a Cat-back before I left the island, but it was a complete waste of money. Sounded bad, looked worse. So I bit the bullet and ordered up the URD Mk2.

What an awesome system! No drone from 1.5k-2.5k, which is where I drive. But when you get on it, it sounds like a grizzly on meth. The top end is definitely pulling harder. I'm officially 100% URD from headers to tailpipe and couldn't be happier. Dyno shortly to see how this opened her up!

ONLY issues: 1) it bumps the spare. Probably not an issue on the X-Runners it was designed for, but with the full size spare under there, it rests against it. 2) Even with the u-clamps tightened to deformation-tight, I couldn't stop the exhaust leaks in front/rear of the muffler. Easy fix: I just had a shop weld them. Perfect now.

    Fresh out of the box:

15MAR14 - URD Walbro Fuel pump upgrade

I ordered this kit from URD several months ago, but held off on install because of.. well procrastination. To check the health of my fuel system prior, I took a hard look at the AFRs from my latest dyno run, and they were looking pretty solid. Maybe a little lean at 4.5k+, but nothing crazy. Still, I wanted the piece of mind that I wasn't going to randomly detonate under boost due to a failing fuel pump or clogged filter. So I finally installed the kit. The directions provided by URD are fantastic as always. They even break down all the tools you need. Follow them and you're golden.

In addition to looking at the dyno AFRs, I took a look at my fuel trims via my handy new OBD2 setup. My long term fuel trims were sitting around +10%, which is definitely a little high. After install, this fell to ~5%, so it definitely made a difference. I just wish our trucks had a way to monitor fuel pressure without installing something! (there is no stock fuel pressure sensor indicator that I've been able to determine)

    Heres a few shots:

I HATE This cover. It took a while to figure out that it just POPS on over the top of the pump/filter bucket. I tried unscrewing it, I tried gently prying it off, I tried pushing/pulling from every angle, and nothin. Eventually it surrendered to prying by a large flathead screwdriver and frustration fueled rage. This was REALLY fun because you can't drop the tank all the way until you remove the wires.. which attach under this cover.

This is the factory fuel filter. This is it. Lodged at the bottom of the fuel bucket, this dinky thing keeps the bad stuff out of your engine. As you can see, mine is filled with crud. Unsat

Heres a shot inside the tank; looking very clean!

And finally here is a shot of the new hose routing and fuel filter before I trimmed everything up. Much girth, very silver, wow!

I'm sure this has been done before, but I loved it so much I wanted to share my experience. Bottom line: I had an old iphone 4S and wanted to put it to work. So I rigged it up as a scanguage/ultraguage/whatever wannabe. Here was the parts list:

    old iPhone 4S (free-ish)
    old charging cable (free-esque)
    Off Amazon:
    OBD2 WiFi transmitter ($23)
RAM mount iphone 4 adapter ($9)
Ram diamond mount w 1" ball x2 ($14 for both)
DashCommand app ($10 on apple app store)
    Lowes:
Black M5x.8x20 screws, nylon lock nuts, rubber washers, reg washers ($5)

    Assembled like so:
removed panel below left side drivers vent, drilled holes(13/64"s for M5 worked pretty well):

why I got the rubber washers:

    RAM mount in place:

Only thing I'd do different: I'm ordering a longer extension arm to get it a little farther from the wiper control lever. Also, gunna reroute the charging cable more out of the way.

Total cost: ~$61 + shipping and tax and whatnot..

I love it; nothing keeps my foot out of the gas like a CONSTANT reminder of how much $$ that supercharger is sucking down haha

PLEASE let Gadget know about the exhaust.

I brought this to attention almost a year ago
cost me an extra $200 IIRC to FIX the exhaust.

I have some Private messeges where people had the same issue, but didnt want to come forward and worry about hurt feelings, or just sold the setup and didnt want to look back.... thats not helping the rest of us!

either way, I stated a problem and never got any help.. 4 months of feeling like I WAS AT FAULT OR MAKING UP SOME BS STORY. Then I finally had it fixed on my dime..Please come forward and let him know theres a possibility of the system needing tweaking for non x runners?

Save more people extra money down the road, and embarrassment.

come on over or call Gadget if u dont mind
